The General Construction Superintendent is responsible for scheduling, coordinating, and supervising the work of all site operatives, ensuring that all work is delivered safely on time and within budget along with managing equipment and materials required.
Responsibilities:
- Participates in the preparation, organization, and overall coordination of the site: orders equipment, takes budgetary decisions, etc.
- Together with the Project Manager, works on the creation of teams, and deals with internal transfers.
- Helps in the choice of specified technical options and in the definition of equipment: adjusting new equipment and perfecting techniques.
- In collaboration with the Design Offices, chooses the building methods for optimized feasibility and safety.
- Provides direction to the sub-contractor Supervisor(s); organizes their work: sets objectives, checks the schedules timeframes, the efficiency and quality of production, etc. Ensures the resources for inspection are efficient.
- Draws up the necessary sub-schedules for the works.
- Ensures that the scheduling/quality/safety objectives are respected.
- Ensures the execution of integrated sub- contracted works or those necessary for the structure (on a large especially complex site, on a very large standard complexity site). Implements specific site procedures.
- Liaises, in all areas, between the site and the Site Engineering Team.
- Integrates and manages the constraints of other parties working on site as well as the co-activity.
- Ensures consistency of the Health and Safety Plans regarding all external parties on site.
- Continuously analyses and suggests improvements in performance.
- Finalizes, with the relevant management dept, the works budget for the different progress status points (objective, 20% progress point, etc.) and analyses the variance during presentations.
Technical:
- Capable of establishing procedures or specific instructions for the site, in collaboration with the Methods, Safety and Contract Management teams.
- Has good knowledge of the contractual rules of the project.
- Knows and adheres to legislation related to construction sites
- Can analyze the compatibility between the different execution documents of the site: plans, bills of quantities, etc.
- Interprets, analyses, explains complex drawings and manages the latest version of the execution drawings.
- Interprets and adapts the execution schedule
- Defines procedures beforehand with the Construction Methods department and has the Project Director validate them.
Handoff with cross shift and effective communication skills
Able to lead multi-disciplinary teams
Must be willing to work afternoon or evening shifts during peak construction season
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management or related discipline OR trade certification in relevant discipline and equivalent work experience
7-10 years proven track record of leading teams in large, multi-scope projects
Previous mega project experience an asset
Must be able to work on an in-process construction site, including climbing stairs and ladders, steep/ slippery terrain and outdoors in all types of Alberta weather.
- Must know how to direct teams, lead and unite them.
- Must be adaptable, capable of teaching and passing on knowledge.
- Must share the values of the company and be able to pass them on.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (including Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Word).
- Problem solving skills to analyze data and identify trends.
- Strong interpersonal and communication (written & verbal) skills are required.
- Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work; Ability to meet deadlines under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
- Self-directed, takes initiative, and ability to perform as part of a team.
- Positive attitude, professional and reliable.
- Valid Drivers’ License and ability to provide a Driver’s Abstract
