General Labourer - Key Responsibilities
· Provide assistance to Site Superintendent with layout, health & safety, and general cleaning
· Read Plans and Specifications to determine work activities.
· Assist in construction of buildings from excavation to completion of interior finishes
· Load and unload materials and move materials about in work areas as directed
· Direct traffic at or near building sites
· Assist with clerical duties, including collecting and sorting of delivery tickets for materials
· Signal equipment operators to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery, equipment, and materials.
· Handle and operate pumps for dewatering, compressors, and generators to provide power for tools, machinery and/or equipment to move materials.
· Maintain a clean construction site to eliminate possible hazards, including sweeping, vacuuming and mopping / washing, as required.
· Handling and disposal of construction debris in Disposal Bin located on Site.
· Dig ditches or trenches, backfill excavations, and compact and level earth to grade specifications, using picks, shovels, pneumatic tampers, and rakes.
· Erect and dismantle scaffolding, shoring, braces, traffic barricades, ramps, and other temporary structures.
· Perform other duties as assigned by Site Superintendent
Health and Safety
· Work in compliance with the provisions of the OHSA, regulations, and internal policies and procedures;
· Report to his or her supervisor any missing or defective equipment or protective device which could endanger any person;
· Report to his or her manager the contravention of the OHSA, regulations, or company H&S policies and procedures or any observed hazard;
· Refrain from operating any equipment, machine, device or thing or otherwise working in a manner that may endanger anyone;
· Avoid engaging in any prank, contest, feat of strength, unnecessary running or rough and boisterous conduct;
· Know, understand and implement safe work practices and procedures;
· Know, understand and employ established rules and procedures for handling materials, equipment and processes (e.g. reporting unlabelled containers, using proper lifting techniques, etc.);
· Request that worn out or defective equipment be replaced;
· Use all safety devices provided, ensuring optimum condition of devices and report any defects immediately to a supervisor;
· Use equipment and materials only in the manner intended;
· Report all injuries, incidents, hazards and unusual conditions immediately to supervisor;
· Attend all required health and safety training programs (e.g. WHMIS, orientation), and apply knowledge to daily operating procedures;
· Follow Standard Operating Procedures as related to your work area.
Education, Experience, and Key Competencies
· High School Diploma generally required.
· Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, including the ability to communicate. effectively with all levels of the organization.
· Knowledge of construction materials.
· Able to use basic power tools and complete basic building maintenance.
· Valid “G” Driver’s licence.
Working Conditions
· Typical hours: Monday to Friday, 7:00 am to 4:00 pm;
· Significant physical effort. Significant exposure to environmental conditions. Moderate shift work or non-standard hours of work required
