The Prince George Citizen, a locally owned, community-focused weekly newspaper with more than 100 years of news reporting excellence, is hiring an editor.
We’re looking for someone with a fresh, positive outlook on community news who wants to join our team. As the paper expands — we’ve more than doubled the size of our news team on our way to winning several national news awards in the past two years — we’re adding a person to our newsroom to be part of the editing desk.
Your responsibilities would include:
- Co-ordinating story assignments and schedules with reporters
- Editing news copy using CP style and writing SEO-friendly headlines
- Occasionally writing copy from the newsroom or covering events
- Updating The Citizen’s busy website with the latest breaking news
- Curating the paper’s daily e-mail newsletter
- Layout and design of the weekly print edition
- Representing the paper in the community
Ideal experience and qualifications:
- You are an experienced print or digital news editor
- You have a passion for local news and continuing our legacy of award-winning coverage
- You’ve earned a post-secondary degree or diploma in journalism
- You have a solid familiarity with Canadian Press style
- You have Adobe Creative Suite experience, specifically Photoshop and InDesign
- You’re familiar with newsroom content management systems
- Good photography and video skills are key
- You’re comfortable with social media
- A reliable vehicle is required
This is not a remote job. You would be relocating to Prince George, an amazing community of approximately 80,000 people in the centre of British Columbia. We contribute to moving expenses for people joining our team.
There’s no such thing as a slow news day here. Our team is always busy covering breaking news, investigating larger issues or writing feature stories about the people that make this community tick.
The newsroom is located in the Citizen building along with all the paper’s other operations. However, commuting time to work is five to 15 minutes during rush hour from anywhere in the city.
If you enjoy outdoor activities, you can find what you’re looking for within 30 minutes of our city. Within an hour there are literally hundreds of lakes, creeks, and rivers to explore https://tourismpg.com/.
