The National Equipment Design: Non-ILEC team has the mandate to leverage TELUS’ design and engineering standards, interoperability, migration, technology integration strategy, business rationale and performance, to develop equipment engineering specifications and provide expertise to TELUS' customers and stakeholders in the alignment with TELUS' strategy, and support of an EBITDA positive business, while reducing capital intensity and complexity of implementing and operating the networks and systems.

You will leverage TELUS’s Next Generation Network (NGN) to design hardware and networking solutions for TELUS’ business customers. Such networks would contain, for example IP, Optical Transport, Video Broadcasting, VoIP, Wireless and AC/DC Power. To be successful in this role you will bring strong industry knowledge coupled with business acumen. You must possess an aptitude for using niche and custom engineering systems and tools.

You are expected to be able to interpret Tactical Infrastructure Plans for Telecommunications platforms, and provide recommended physical and logical network topology and detailed design specifications, in one or more platforms (Data/IP, Access, Broadband, ETTS, GPON, Transport, Radio, and Switching). You are also expected provide guidance to partner teams and peers and meet committed project timelines and budget.

Typical duties include: designing networks, site visits, data compilation, Visio preparation, inspection, quality control, records accuracy, reporting, testing & troubleshooting assistance and R&D support
Additional duties: Carry out studies, co-ordination of work, designing equipment templates, develop e2e designs, interpret/evaluate situations and/or data, operate pilot plants/projects, prepare specifications, specify tests, and resolve complex problems

Qualifications

You’re the missing piece of the puzzle
Knowledge of engineering, installation, and safety standards and regulations applicable to telecommunications design and build
Detailed technical understanding in one or more of data, IP, DSL, transport, access, switching, platform, and power network disciplines including their associated interdependencies
Broad understanding of the network infrastructure provisioning process
Demonstrated design expertise in areas such as WAN, LAN, IP, Hosting, Wireless, Optical networks, DWDM, TCP/IP, MPLS, IP VPNs, VoIP, IP Telephony, Video Codecs, Wireless, SONET, IT Strategic Planning, Network Audit, Network and Business Solutions Planning, Internet Data Centers design
Required Skills & Abilities
Intermediate experience in designing telecommunications network topology
Can plan, design, and/or engineer network solutions with basic complexity
Can apply knowledge to insure optimal use and selection of equipment, both physically and logically
Some experience with project commitments for labour and budget, and meet committed deadlines
Must be flexible to manage consent change of technical parameters to support early evolution of technology
Provision or implement methods and procedures to commission or test network elements on new or existing platforms
Demonstrated professional oral and written communication skills
Must be willing and able to work various shifts (such as evening and weekends) as assigned, based on business needs
Must be willing to travel as business needs dictate and possess a valid driver’s license
Qualifications and Experience
Minimum 3 to 6+ years’ experience working in a telecommunications network provisioning environment, general telecommunication, Wireless and/or IT industry
Bachelor’s and Master’s level degrees in Computer Science/Engineering
Preferred qualifications
P. Eng designation
Certifications from vendors such as Nortel, Avaya, Sun, HP and Cisco (CCIE or CCNP)
Juniper-JNCIE
Great-to-haves
Experience in Netcracker-NPI and Design databases is a plus
Experience in Microstation, AFCR is a plus
Experience in AC/DC power is a plus
