SUMMARY
The Assistant Manager is a member of the café operations team responsible for assisting in the Café Manager in the day-to-day running of the café. The main functions of the position are assisting in the direction of a team of Café Supervisors and Baristas and effectively managing the operations of the café in line with the company’s values.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position will be responsible for the overall operations of the café and their duties will include but not be limited to:
● Welcoming customers
● Taking orders, making recommendations and processing transactions
● Communicating with the kitchen of special requirements
● Organizing stock
● Receiving deliveries
● Processing pre-orders through the POS system
● Preparing and serving specialty coffee drinks including espresso-based beverages in line with 49th Parallel’s standards
● Dialing in and tasting espresso and coffees to ensure product quality
● Assisting with newer staff and helping to train on in-café routines and barista skills
● Organization of staff positions and responsibilities throughout the shift.
● Holding keys and being responsible for the opening and closing of the café
● Assist with weekly and monthly inventory counting and placing orders.
● Dealing with errors in supplier deliveries and organizing re-delivery.
● Dealing with customer enquiries and complaints, following protocol for how to escalate issues beyond your remit.
● Providing feedback to Café Manager on barista and supervisor progression.
● Demonstrating new drink recipes to staff.
● Updating in café information sheets to represent current offerings, ensuring staff are familiar with the offerings.
*Other duties and special projects may be assigned from time to time.
QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will have the following competencies, qualifications and experience:
· 2+ years experience in specialty coffee service with significant knowledge of espresso extraction, brewed coffee methods.
· Working knowledge of manual and volumetric espresso machines, and basic maintenance.
· 18 months experience in supervisory / management positions within the hospitality and service sector and 6 months experience as a Supervisor at 49th Parallel.
· Previous experience of hiring and staff development.
· Knowledge of inventory systems.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
· Good working knowledge of Excel.
· Deep understanding of POS systems, their functionalities and limitations.
· Exceptional knowledge of and a desire to forge a career in the specialty coffee industry.
