Utility Operator

Reporting to the Environmental Services Manager, this position is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the water/wastewater/storm utility system.


  • Ensure the safe, efficient and compliant operation of the water treatment and distribution system, wastewater treatment and collection system
  • Ensure the safe, efficient and compliant operation of the storm water system
  • Responsible for meeting all Federal and Provincial Legislative Regulations
  • Responsible for reporting data analysis to multiple stakeholders and agencies
  • Ensure quality control and standard method practices are being utilized in order to ensure the production of safe drinking water and environmentally acceptable wastewater effluent.
  • Responsible to achieve and maintain the highest level of operation certification, which the Town of Sylvan Lake holds through their Provincial Approvals and for upgrading education as required by employer
  • Oversee contracted service participation in utility projects
  • Professionally interacting with all internal and external customers and stakeholders
  • Efficiently plan all required daily activities while ensuring that priorities in safety and compliance are being met at all times.
  • Assist Department in capital budget planning, research
  • Investigation and documentation of any/all concerns regarding water/wastewater/storm system management
  • Evaluate and advise on all new operation systems
  • Must stay current with all new technologies, standard methods and legal requirement
  • Provide back up support to Public Works as required
  • Participation on the on-call rotation
  • Repair and maintenance of specific job related equipment, structures etc
  • Act in a leadership role as required and directed by Management
  • Other duties as required


  • Grade 12 / GED or Equivalent
  • Minimum 4 years of experience with over 8000 contact hours in a class 2 or higher wastewater collections / water distribution/
  • Minimum 4 years of experience level 1 water treatment system
  • 2 years Direct Responsible Charge (DRC) experience in a class 2 or higher wastewater collection and water distribution system with no less than 2400 hrs total
  • Certifications in: Level 1 Wastewater treatment, Level 2 Wastewater Collection, Level 2 Water distribution, Level 1 Water treatment
  • Successful completion of a post-secondary program or degree in Water and Wastewater, Science, Environmental Studies, Engineering, or Hydrogeology, will be considered an asset.
  • Able to read and comprehend schematics / blueprints / manuals / engineers drawings/ approvals
  • Strong experience in communicating professionally verbally / electronically/ and in written form
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines, work both independently and within a team environment
  • Experience in making decisions under pressure
  • Able to train and/or supervise staff
  • Knowledge and skill in operating equipment, install water meter devises and related equipment
  • Experience in forecasting inventory requirements/ troubleshooting
  • Ability to interpret and maintain approvals and Provincial and Federal regulatory requirements
  • Hold a current Class 3 with Q Endorsement
  • Clean drivers abstract and Criminal Records check
  • Trained in WHMIS, Fire Extinguisher safety, Confined Spaces,
  • Strong communications skills with contractors / suppliers / vendors / government agencies and other required stakeholders
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions
