Ski Patroller – Grade 2

Reports To: Ski Patrol Supervisor(s) & Director of Public Safety

Position Overview

These are moderately experienced ski patrollers with a minimum of one (1) season of experience at Marmot Basin or over three (3) seasons at another comparable ski hill. The Patroller has exceeded all Grade 1 performance requirements and has demonstrated their ability to function as a strong independent Ski Patroller. These Patrollers are starting to become familiar with the minutia of ski patrolling and when directed

can teach certain skills to others or lead small work projects.

The incumbent should expect to be working outside in any, all and sometimes adverse weather conditions.

This is a full-time seasonal role within the Safety Operations Department. This position has a compressed schedule/two-week rotating cycle: Nine (9) hours per day (operating season), eight (8) hours per day (non-operating season). Alberta Employment Standards regarding probationary periods apply.

Requirements:

18 years of age or older
Demonstrated strong skiing ability in all mountain and snow conditions in “Advanced/Most difficult” and “Expert/Extreme” terrain
Physically fit and able to ski with heavy loads (25+ kg). Has proven physical ability to perform all grade 1 ski patroller tasks
Successfully complete the Marmot Basin First Aid refresher
Attended Marmot Basin’s annual explosives refresher
Gain advanced understanding of all sections of Marmot Basin’s Safety Operations Training Manual, policies, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and First Aid algorithms. Be able to appropriately apply these concepts
Detailed knowledge of Marmot Basin’s terrain including all runs, often used nick names, access and egress trails, all runs in Eagles East, boundary lines, kiddy/tree trails etc.
Heightened understanding of Marmot Basins on slope risk management. Can perform high quality run checks and risk mitigation, and explain associated risk management principles, including the proper completion of all associated paperwork.
Know where all risk management signs and fences should be and how they should be set up.
Know appropriate early season, atypical risk management signs and fences and be able to set up with minimal explanation or supervision
Moves self and other equipment around the hill appropriately and with little or no prompting
Know all sweeps including Eagle’s Ridge East sweeps. Can teach sweeps 1-8
Proven competency with radio protocols, knows all 10 codes, emergency colour calls, standard radio calls, as well as professional use of the radio. Able to fill the Dispatch role
Understands the needs and principles involved with Accident Investigations (AI). Request an accident investigation for the right situation(s). Understanding of all paperwork involved in an Accident Investigation and is able to complete an AI. A higher level of understanding and application of this skill set is highly desirable.
Heightened level of understanding of first aid algorithms and SOP’s. Apply first aid and patient care principals and concepts at an intermediate level. Lead most first aid scenes, patient care and packaging.
High skill level of Rescue Toboggan (10-23) handling in all terrain (includes Akia toboggan use).
Demonstrates competent snowmobile operations at the Basic level (intermediate preferred). Yearly review Marmot Basin’s snow mobile operator’s manual, can a pre-trip inspection, knows all standard snow mobile routes, on hill speed limit, and safe operation procedures
Is able to comfortably perform courtesy rides (10-10’s) on standard snow mobile routes.
Understanding of Marmot Basin’s Avalanche Safety Plan and their role and responsibilities within it.
Heightened level of understanding of the Avalanche rescue plan and companion rescue.
Able to perform efficient beacons searches, probing and lead a small group in shoveling techniques. Three patient searches with clues. Use untrained helpers as shovel team. Two of three targets recovered in under 10 minutes
Demonstrate basic recco skills. Clearing self, simple search for one target in less than three (3) minutes.
Able to perform maintenance cuts in all avalanche terrain: has demonstrated and can explain the reasons for and the safety principals of this action. Know when maintenance cuts are not appropriate.
Able to give a basic snowpack and weather condition updates to the area leader/forecaster
Have the knowledge and perform the duties of an assistant blaster.
Maintain an explosive log book.
Can lead a manual chairlift evacuation team, with an inexperienced partner
Can perform a lift line check and explain it
Has received working at heights training and can climb tower
Can explain and set up a shive by-pass
Deescalate tense situations, remove ski passes, escort guest from the premises, or refer an escalating situation to a supervisor
Read and signed off on Marmot Basin’s Employee Handbook
Read and signed off on the Safety Operations Work Hazard Assessment
Complete all regular currency training and maintain training checklist(s).
Not to exceeded training levels or scope of practice in any task.
Employees in this position are responsible for providing the following tools: Skis, simple sit harness, triple action locking carabiner, three antenna digital transceiver, avalanche probe, avalanche shovel, black ski pants as well as other sundry items. An annual equipment allowance is provided.
It is very strongly recommended that safety operations staff preforming patient care have up to date inoculations against; Polio, Hepatitis A/B, Mumps/Rubella, Diphtheria tetanus, Varicella, Measles, Influenza (yearly), & COVID 19.
Pass a ski binding test, for all work boots & skis, performed & recorded by Marmot Basin Rental/Repair staff.
Have a vulnerable persons record check completed and on file. To be completed yearly
Employees in this position are responsible for providing the following tools: Skis, touring bindings, skins, a head lamp, simple sit harness, triple action locking carabiner, three antenna digital transceiver, avalanche probe, avalanche shovel, black ski pants as well as other sundry items. An annual equipment allowance is provided.
It is very strongly recommended that safety operations staff performing patient care have up to date inoculations against; Polio, Hepatitis A/B, Mumps/Rubella, Diphtheria tetanus, Varicella, Measles, Influenza (yearly), & COVID 19.

Qualifications:

Exceeded all performance requirements for a Ski Patroller – Grade 1
80 hour advanced First Aid course or higher, has completed all annual training and recertification with a current CPR certification. Completion of advanced training protocols preferred
At least 30 patient interactions.
Canadian Avalanche Association (CAA) Industry training Program (ITP) level1
Completed Marmot Basins Annual explosives refresher
Have a Natural Resources Canada Explosive Regulatory Division letter of approval to handle high powered explosives
Incident Command System (ICS) 100 (preferred)
Basic snowmobile operator signoff (intermediate preferred)
Clear Criminal Record and Vulnerable Person Record Check on file with Human Resources
Workplace hazardous materials training (WHMIS)
Completed working at heights training
Rope rescue training/certification (preferred)
Alberta Class 5 Driver’s license, or equivalent

Job duties/ Responsibilities:

Work in a safe and efficient manner as a member of the Safety Operations team
On-slope risk management: identify and mitigate hazards on the hill (run checks, hazard marking)
On-slope maintenance: perform trail maintenance as required (snow farming, shoveling, fencing etc.), maintenance cuts in open avalanche terrain
Enforce the “Alpine Responsibility Code”, slow riding zones, area closures
Identify and address safety concerns pertaining to staff and guests. Ensure supervisors are made aware of residual risks of concern
Demonstrate knowledge of equipment locations, use, and movement
Skillfully apply Marmot Basin’s radio procedures and protocols
Provide on-hill rescue, first aid and triage: attend, treat and transport patients using the minimum required manpower resources
When directed can instruct basic patrol topics to in training and Grade 1 Ski Patrollers, including: sweeps, hazard marking, rescue toboggans (10-23) use
Act as a Team Member during avalanche control missions, including working as an assistant blaster
Act as a Team leader during lift evacuations, perform intermediate skills associated with “Lift down procedures (10-30’s)” as well as manual lift evacuation
Act as a Team Member during avalanche rescue and missing person response
Perform end of day area checks and sweeps
Operate snowmobiles
Respect and adhere to the company’s policies and procedures as set in the “Corporate Policies”, “Employee Handbook” and “Safety Operations Training Manual”
Understand and adhere to Ski Marmot Basin’s “Harassment Policy” and the company’s “Privacy Policy”.
Report damage to vehicles to the vehicle maintenance supervisor.
Other duties as assigned by supervisors.
All Marmot Basin employees will conduct themselves in compliance with Alberta Occupational Health and Safety legislation as it relates to their job
