Teaching Assistants provide support to students with a variety of special needs including physical, developmental and behavioural. Teaching Assistants work with children with special needs in a classroom setting, either in an integrated mainstream classroom or in a contained classroom.

Casual Teaching Assistants work on an "as needed" basis. As a casual Teaching Assistant, you will have the opportunity to apply for permanent positions, when available, and long-term positions throughout the school year.

Teaching Assistants work during the school year only. There will be school shut down periods in December (winter break), March Break and during the summer months when Teaching Assistants do not work and are not paid.

Teaching Assistant Qualifications:
All Peel District School Board Teaching Assistants require one of the following degrees /diplomas:

Autism and Behavioural Science
Behavioral Science Technology
Child and Youth Worker diploma / Child and Youth Care diploma
Community and Justice diploma
Corrections Worker diploma
Developmental Disabilities Worker diploma
Development Service Worker diploma
Educational Assistant diploma / Educational Support diploma
Early Childhood Education Diploma (with special needs experience)
Intervenor for Deaf-Blind Persons diploma
Post-ECE Advanced Studies in Special Needs diploma
Bachelor of Arts degree - Child and Youth Care
Bachelor of Arts degree - Psychology
Bachelor of Arts degree - Sociology
Bachelor of Arts - Exceptionality in Human Learning
Bachelor of Social Work
Registered Nurse
Registered Practical Nurse
Social Service Worker (Gerontology and Immigrants and Refugees specializations not applicable)
Ontario College of Teachers Certification with minimum Additional Qualification (AQ) in Spec. Ed. Part 1

Candidates must also be able to perform the essential physical duties of the position to support our children with special needs which may include toileting, lifting, transferring and personal care. Candidates must have a demonstrated commitment to working in a diverse school community and / or work environment.

In your application, please include your experience working with children, youth and / or adults who have a variety of special needs. Although not necessary, school-based experience is an asset.

Criminal Record Check:
For the safety of students, successful candidates will be required to submit a satisfactory criminal record check prior to the commencement of any employment duties. Recent changes made by the RCMP have resulted in significant processing delays for some candidates. You may wish to start the process to obtain your criminal record check as soon as possible.
