NFTS operates a short line railway and reload facility in Trail, BC. We are proud of our impressive safety culture, positive employee environment, and strong community involvement through local events and initiatives.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will become a key member of the NFTS Railway Team that operates our railway and reload in Trail.
This is a dual-role position: you will perform both locomotive engineer and conductor duties, while also contributing to broader railway operations. The role will periodically require you to load and unload railcars, perform track maintenance, and support transload operations in addition to your engineer and conductor responsibilities.
Key duties include:
- Performing conductor duties such as switching, car inspections, train assembly, and safe train handling.
- Operating locomotives in compliance with CROR rules and company procedures.
- Supporting general railway operations including forklift operation (training provided), track maintenance, and transload support.
- Loading and unloading railcars as required.
- Completing daily inspections of locomotives, track, and equipment.
- Maintaining accurate operational records and reports.
- Contributing as a flexible team member to all aspects of railway and reload operations.
Qualifications, Experience and Skills
- Certified Conductor & Locomotive Engineer (CROR qualified) required.
- Forklift experience is an asset, but candidates must be willing to obtain training and certification.
- Prior track maintenance experience is an asset.
- High School Diploma or Equivalent required.
- First Aid certification is an asset.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety and an excellent attendance record.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills.
- Physically capable of railway work (walking, standing, climbing, bending, and lifting).
