Flying Minds Education Centre is seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Elementary Science Teacher to teach students in Grades 1–6.
Our science program combines structured instruction with hands-on experiments, laboratory activities, engineering challenges, projects, videos, worksheets, quizzes, and assessments. Students explore life science, Earth and space science, ecosystems, human body systems, weather, habitats, adaptations, fossils, cells, and other grade-appropriate scientific concepts.
The successful candidate will help students develop scientific knowledge, curiosity, confidence, problem-solving abilities, and practical laboratory skills.
Preference will be given to Alberta-certified teachers, retired certified teachers, and student teachers.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging science lessons for students in Grades 1–6.
- Teach age-appropriate concepts in life science, Earth and space science, ecology, human biology, weather, habitats, ecosystems, cells, plants, animals, and related areas.
- Connect scientific concepts to engineering, design, and real-world applications.
- Lead hands-on experiments and laboratory activities using microscopes, beakers, cylinders, test tubes, chemicals, models, and other science equipment.
- Demonstrate the safe and appropriate use of laboratory tools and materials.
- Follow and enforce established safety procedures, including the use of goggles, gloves, lab coats, and adult supervision.
- Guide students in documenting experiments and completing clear, age-appropriate laboratory reports.
- Prepare science demonstrations, models, projects, worksheets, quizzes, and assessments.
- Evaluate student understanding at the end of each unit and provide constructive feedback.
- Adapt instruction to different ages, abilities, learning styles, and levels of scientific knowledge.
- Create a positive, inclusive, organized, and encouraging classroom environment.
- Maintain accurate attendance, progress, and assessment records.
- Prepare students for science and engineering competitions, including the APEGA Science Olympics and similar events.
- Guide competition teams through brainstorming, research, design, construction, testing, problem-solving, and presentation.
- Communicate professionally with parents and collaborate with the Flying Minds education team.
- Organize classroom materials and ensure that laboratory equipment is properly maintained and stored.
Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of elementary science and a genuine enthusiasm for science education.
- Experience teaching or working with elementary-aged children.
- Ability to explain scientific concepts clearly and in an age-appropriate manner.
- Confidence leading experiments and hands-on laboratory activities.
- Strong classroom-management, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to create lessons that combine scientific knowledge with practical exploration.
- Patience, creativity, reliability, and enthusiasm for working with young learners.
- Commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful learning environment.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of an educational team.
- Candidates must currently reside in Calgary or the surrounding area, as this is an on-site position and remote work is not available.
Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to candidates who are:
- Alberta-certified teachers
- Retired certified teachers
- Student teachers currently completing a Bachelor of Education
- Graduates of education, science, engineering, biology, chemistry, environmental science, or a related field
- Experienced in teaching elementary science in a school, learning centre, camp, or extracurricular program
- Familiarity with the NGScience elementary science program is considered an asset https://ngscience.com
- Familiar with the Alberta elementary science curriculum
- Experienced in laboratory safety and supervising children during experiments
- Experienced in preparing students for science fairs, engineering challenges, or competitions such as the APEGA Science Olympics
