About the role
This is your opportunity to put your career on the fast track.
Our Commercial Lines Underwriter Academy is an accelerated 18-month New Graduate learning experience designed to give you unparalleled expertise and grow your career in an exciting industry. The ideal candidates will demonstrate strong business acumen, excellent communication skills, an innovative mindset, and a strong eagerness to learn and grow. In this program, you’ll rotate through different teams while mentors, managers, and underwriting coaches teach you the ins and outs of our commercial insurance business through a variety of learning styles.
So, what exactly is Commercial Lines insurance? And what does an Underwriter do?
Commercial Lines is a major part of our operations that provides insurance solutions to businesses small and large in our communities so they can continue to run their business without the worry of tomorrow. We provide insurance products like property, casualty, and automobile coverage - through our network of Brokers across the country.
Our Underwriters understand our products inside and out. As a member of the team, you’d become a champion of risk assessment and work directly with Intact’s network of Brokers – the people who sell our products to businesses – to make sure they understand the products, know how to market them, and help them to evaluate the potential risks of taking on certain portfolios.
Through this 18-month program, you will:
-
Start out as an Underwriting Assistant in your first rotation, gradually take on additional duties, progress to Underwriter Level I and finally to your last rotation as an Underwriter Level II.
-
Get exposure to different lines of commercial business within Property and Casualty. You build up the general knowledge you’ll need for underwriting success through rotations on different teams.
-
Learn the technical aspects of insurance: assessing and evaluating risk to make empowered decisions; and how to quote, negotiate and authorize new business and policy renewals.
-
Develop and learn in inspiring ways – instructor-led, on-the-job and self-study – in a collaborative work environment.
-
Be involved in stimulating, challenging business cases, complete courses as you work towards your Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) Designation and development opportunities to help you grow your skills and expertise.
-
Build relationships with our Broker partners – the core of our business – and learn how to live our values every day.
-
Increase your professional networks – both at Intact, within the industry and at events.
-
After 18 action-packed months, you’ll emerge an Underwriter Level II ready to dive into the world of commercial insurance and manage your own portfolios. You’ll be placed in one of our Commercial Lines Property and Casualty teams in the region you have chosen.
What you bring to the table:
-
Recent or soon-to-be university or college graduate preferred but not limited to Arts, Business and Insurance programs (graduation year Spring 2022 to Spring 2025).
