University Advancement at McMaster University is an integrated department that encompasses the areas of Communications and Public Affairs, Marketing, Development, Alumni Advancement, Stewardship & Donor Relations, Volunteer Engagement and Advancement Services & Operations, and works collaboratively with McMaster’s Faculties and units across campus. Communications and Public Affairs (CAPA) is responsible for McMaster’s communications (including, media relations, issues management, internal communications, neighbourhood relations), marketing and branding, and public affairs (formerly government relations) with all three levels of government.
Under the direction of the leader, this position is responsible for a variety of content creation duties for written and digital publications, communications and sites for the department and University. Responsibilities include creating and editing written, visual or multimedia content for a variety of platforms including, but not limited to, news and centralized social media sites. Supports the implementation of creative strategies and content to grow audience engagement, particularly in emerging social media platforms while also creating material for other departmental and University publications and sites and contributing to other projects within the department as required. Uses various content management systems to ensure online and social media content is generated in an appropriate manner that engages and grows specific audiences. The position contributes to a wide scope of communications produced by University Advancement, including development communications and proposals to our alumni, individual and corporate funders, students, community, and government partners, as well as other audiences targeted by marketing efforts. This involves interacting with various stakeholders to ensure content produced reflects McMaster University’s positioning and branding to diverse audiences.

Due to the nature of this position, some evening and weekend work, as well as travel, is required.
Under the direction of the supervisor, support the research and implementation of communications for websites, print materials and publications and other digital platforms and venues.
Update and maintain the content on the department’s various websites and social platforms.
Support subject interviews, attend and report on various University events and activities and do research, all of which contributes to content creation.
Remain current on upcoming events, institutional priorities and sensitivities to ensure all are reflected appropriately in our communications.
Gather and compile information to post on the daily news site ensuring the accuracy and validity of information.
Produce photo layouts, videos and designs for web sites and publications.
Develop and implement interactive online photo galleries.
Manage the input and submission of information from a variety of sources.
Ensure the comprehensive and orderly flow of information.
Coordinate and plan weekly editorial meetings and photo and video shoots.
Provide information and support for proper use of digital photography and videography equipment and other forms of electronic communications media following McMaster policies and standards.
Provide advice to others regarding editorial, design, digital photography services and website maintenance following McMaster policies and standards.
Provide technology support to the team for issues with social media, digital design, photography, videography, and electronic management of resources.
Provide branding, digital design, video production, photography, social media and content creation support and consultation to departments, Faculties, and individuals.
Research current trends and opportunities for creating efficiencies within production.
Integrate stories and ideas across publications and platforms, while working with media relations and other partners and online communities to advance the University.
Manage individual priorities within the framework established by the department and respond well to rapid change and a changing flow of assignments.
Brand all internal and external projects ensuring that appropriate University visual identity guidelines are followed.
Advise external clients of University advertising guidelines when creating digital and print materials.
Contact vendors to confirm the status of projects and ensure deadlines are maintained.
Maintain and update filing systems both electronic and hardcopy.
Maintain the security and confidentiality of materials.
Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Digital Communications, Multimedia or English. A McMaster degree would be an asset.
Requires 2 years of experience working in a public relations, communications, journalism and/or marketing environment
Demonstrated good story sense and an ability to work with a variety of people, often to very tight deadlines
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required (written and oral)
Expertise working with content management systems including WordPress. Proven understanding and experience utilizing social media platforms as part of integrated communication
Technical skills, as appropriate, with production and design programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects and InDesign to create graphic designs and layouts for all materials
Sound judgement, tact, sensitivity, analytical skills and the ability to analyze and interpret information and an ability to work well in a team environment and to contribute when called to assist with other projects within the department.
