The Recreation Coordinator plays an important role in creating a welcoming, engaging, and person-directed environment for elders living in our community. This role focuses on enhancing quality of life by supporting meaningful activities, fostering relationships, and promoting independence, dignity, and choice for all elders.
The successful candidate will help create a vibrant neighbourhood atmosphere where elders, staff, families, volunteers, and the broader community feel connected and valued. This position requires compassion, creativity, teamwork, and a commitment to person-directed care.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation Studies, Recreation Facilitator for Older Adults Program or equivalent education/training preferred
- Experience in senior care or long-term care is considered an asset
- Strong computer and technology skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
- Additional language skills are considered an asset
- Ability to build positive relationships with elders, families, staff, volunteers, and the public
- Adaptable and comfortable working in a progressive, change-oriented environment
- Strong organizational and independent working skills
- Interest in person-directed care and continuous learning
- Ability to meet the physical, emotional, and psychological demands of the role
- Plan, organize, coordinate, and facilitate meaningful recreational and social programs for elders
- Support activities in cottages, villages, small groups, large groups, and special events
- Develop monthly activity calendars and daily programming plans with elder input
- Complete elder assessments and assist with establishing goals and interventions
- Maintain accurate documentation including assessments, attendance, care plans, progress notes, and reviews using Welbi and Yardi platforms
- Purchase supplies, decorate activity spaces, set up and clean up programs and events
- Encourage elder participation and provide options based on individual preferences and choices
- Support opportunities for elders to connect with animals, plants, children, volunteers, and the broader community
- Assist elders with the care of animals and plants as part of programming when applicable
- Support elders to spend time outdoors daily when desired
- Work collaboratively with the Life Enrichment Director and team members to support a strong and positive work environment
- Participate in neighbourhood meetings and respond to elder feedback and concerns
- Contribute to departmental planning, policies, procedures, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Participate in committees, meetings, educational sessions, and team huddles
- Mentor and support new and visiting staff members
- Promote teamwork, wellness, and ongoing professional development
- Follow all safety procedures, infection control measures, and organizational policies
- Maintain clean, safe, and organized workspaces
- Report elder or staff safety concerns immediately
- Practice safe use of equipment and chemicals
- Participate in required safety education and emergency preparedness training
- Protect the confidentiality and privacy of elders and staff in accordance with PHIA and organizational standards
- Flexibility to work day and evening shifts required. Working one Saturday per month is mandatory.
