Heavy Equipment Operator – Underground Utilities

Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced and safety-focused Heavy Equipment Operator to join our underground utilities construction team. The successful candidate will be responsible for operating excavators and other heavy equipment to install, repair, and maintain underground utility systems, including water, sewer, storm drainage, and related infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate excavators, and other heavy equipment.
- Perform excavation work for underground utility installations and repairs.
- Read and interpret utility plans, grade stakes, and site drawings.
- Work closely with pipe layers, laborers, foremen, and site supervisors.
- Locate and expose existing underground utilities using safe excavation practices.
- Perform trenching, backfilling, grading, and site preparation activities.
- Conduct daily equipment inspections and complete maintenance reports.
- Ensure all work is completed in accordance with company safety policies and local regulations.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Assist with other construction-related duties as required.
Qualifications
- Minimum (5-10) years of experience operating heavy equipment in underground utility construction.
- Experience with water, sewer, storm, and utility installation projects.
- Valid driver’s license; Class [A/1/CDL] preferred.
- Ability to read and understand construction plans and utility drawings.
- Knowledge of safe trenching and excavation practices.
- Strong awareness of underground utility locating procedures.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Equipment operator certification.
- Confined space, trench safety, or utility construction training.
- Experience working around live utilities.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to work extended hours when project schedules require.
- Comfortable working on uneven terrain and in construction environments.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $30.00-$38.00 per hour
