Position Summary
This position reports to the Site Lead and operates under the direction of the Executive Director and Manager of Family Service. The Building Caretaker is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary environment for children, families, and staff by performing routine and deep cleaning duties. This role ensures that all indoor and outdoor areas of the facility, including common areas, staff rooms, washrooms, kitchens, entrances, and playground spaces—are cleaned, maintained, and compliant with health and safety standards.
Some Key Responsibilities
- Maintain cleanliness across offices, kitchens, washrooms, common areas, entrances, and outdoor spaces.
- Perform routine cleaning: sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, disinfecting, waste removal, and restocking supplies.
- Complete deep cleaning of appliances, vents, windows, and other facility areas as required.
- Support kitchen/lunchroom cleaning, including dishwashing and sanitizing food areas.
- Assist with supplies, inventory organization, and reporting maintenance or safety issues.
- Maintain outdoor areas, including litter removal, seasonal maintenance, and snow clearing.
- Follow all health and safety procedures for cleaning products and equipment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of cleaning, disinfecting, and safe handling of cleaning products in a childcare setting.
- WHMIS certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Strong attention to detail, commitment to cleanliness standards, and ability to work independently.
- Reliable, punctual, and dependable.
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and a warm, friendly, respectful presence when engaging with children, families and colleagues.
Qualifications
- OSSD or equivalent.
- 18 years or older.
- Cleaning experience in childcare, healthcare, or education is an asset.
- Vulnerable Sector Check (current, within 6 months).
- Up-to-date immunization record.
Working Conditions
- Physically demanding role requiring frequent lifting (up to 40 lbs), bending, reaching, kneeling, and extended periods of standing and walking.
- Regular exposure to cleaning and disinfecting products while following required safety procedures.
- Work performed in active childcare environments, both indoors and outdoors, with children, families, and staff present.
Schedule & Hours
- Daytime hours, Monday to Friday.
- Some evening work is required.
- 35 hours per week
