POSITION SUMMARY:
The Journeyman Carpenter contributes to the effective operation of the Service and Maintenance Department by providing technical leadership for housing repairs, preventative maintenance, accessibility modifications, emergency repairs, contractor coordination, apprentice development, and quality assurance activities. The position works closely with the Service and Maintenance Manager, Service Coordinator, and Project Coordinator to assess repair requirements, develop technical scopes of work, prepare estimates to support the RFQ process, assist with coordinating contractors and trades, mentor apprentices, ensure compliance with applicable building codes and standards, maintain accurate digital documentation, and support safe, efficient, and culturally respectful service delivery to Home Occupants. The Journeyman Carpenter serves as a technical resource for the department and may assist with inspections, condition assessments, deficiency reviews, and technical evaluations as required. Major renovation requirements identified during inspections shall be documented and referred through the appropriate Housing Department renovation approval process.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Assessment and Planning– conduct technical assessments, deficiency reviews, inspections, and condition evaluations related to service requests, emergency repairs, contractor quality reviews, warranty concerns, and housing maintenance issues. Prepare reports, recommendations, and renovation referrals as required. Develop scopes of work, specifications, labour estimates, material lists, schedules, and technical recommendations for approved maintenance and repair projects. Support preventative maintenance planning and assist the Project Coordinator with project delivery.
· Contractor and Quality Oversight– monitorcontractor and trade workmanship, quality standards, project progress, code compliance, and project close-out requirements.
· Carpentry and Maintenance– performcarpentry repairs, emergency repairs, accessibility modifications, and other routine and structural maintenance work. Identify conditions requiring major renovation, replacement, or capital investment and refer them through the appropriate Housing process.
· Mentorship– mentorapprentices, labourers, and junior staff by providing coaching, technical guidance, safety training, and support for workforce development and trade certification.
· Documentation and Community Relations– maintainaccurate, organized, and audit-ready records using MaintainX, Microsoft 365, and approved departmental systems, including work orders, reports, photographs, inspection records, and project documentation. Provide respectful, professional, and culturally appropriate service while maintaining positive relationships with Nation members, Elders, Leadership, staff, contractors, and stakeholders.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
· Desired Education, Knowledge, and Experience:
o Certified Journeyman Carpenter recognized by the Province of Alberta is required.
o Interprovincial Red Seal Endorsement is an asset.
o Residential Home Inspector, Building Inspector, PCA, SAIT Home Inspection Certificate, or equivalent inspection training is an asset.
o Knowledge of Tsuut'ina Culture and Language considered an asset.
o Proficiency in Microsoft 365 and MaintainX or CMMS Software.
o Five (5) years of residential construction, maintenance, or project support experience.
o Experience supervising contractors and mentoring apprentices.
o Experience working within Indigenous communities considered an asset.
· Personal Attributes:
o Expertise in residential maintenance and repair.
o Ability to interpret and apply building codes.
o Ability to prepare scopes of work and cost estimates, coordinate contractors, and manage quality control.
o Ability to utilize mobile devices, digital inspections, and electronic reporting systems.
· General Employment Requirements:
o Valid Driver’s License, and reliable transportation.
o Criminal Record Check.
o Oath of Confidentiality.
