Alternate Shelter Society
We are a non-profit organization providing residential services to youth struggling with a range of issues including addiction, attachment disorders, social skill deficits, anger management, contact with law enforcement and/or the sex trade, and mental health. Our Resource is located in Coquitlam and our main office is located in Vancouver.
Qualifications
1. A minimum 2-year relevant diploma, or equivalent of education/experience working with children and youth with behavioural and other needs.
2. Specific training in behavioural modification, children over 12 years of age with support needs, attachment-based parenting, and relationship-based interventions (Trauma-informed practice).
3. Practical and theoretical knowledge of adolescent development.
4. Demonstrated ability to manage stress and perform well under pressure.
5. Ability to maintain a non-judgmental attitude in the face of a variety of behaviours, and does not have biases in terms of culture, religion, race, creed, sexuality, ability or physical appearance.
6. Is willing to assume the role of advocate for youth.
7. Is able to make clear decisions in crisis situations.
8. Must assume responsibility for decisions made while on the job.
9. Should be able to establish good working relationships with outside agencies and the Ministry of Children and Family Development.
10. Show a commitment to furthering personal development in the field of youth care.
11. Demonstrated skill in conflict resolution, mediation and anger management.
12. Working knowledge of the legal requirements and Ministry of Children and Family Development guidelines that impact the youth care sector.
13. Commitment to delivering a consistent high level of services to the children and youth served by Alternate Shelter Society.
14. Sound oral and written communication skills.
15. Sound keyboarding and computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office Programs.
Successful applicants will need to complete a criminal records check and undergo a Tuberculin skin test if one has not been previously completed. We will cover the cost of the Tuberculin skin test. Having a valid first aid certificate is an asset.
We are looking for candidates who are available to work weekday 7am-3pm shifts, anywhere from 8 hours to 32 hours a week.
Occasionally, coverage may be needed for other shifts and days of the week, including evenings, overnights and weekends.
