What can I expect to do in this role?
Under the general supervision of the Maintenance Superintendent you will:

  • assess electrical and advance traffic management needs;
  • direct employees and contractors in the construction, maintenance and repair of electrical systems and facilities;
  • inspect electrical contracts and manage third party maintenance;
  • review electrical designs, provide reports and attend technical review meetings on behalf of the ministry;
  • provide technical advice and recommendations on electrical matters;
  • serve on various committees and task forces as required.
NOTE: this position will be required to travel on a regular basis.

How do I qualify?
  • The position requires the successful candidate to have a valid G license or equivalent. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that s/he has a valid driver's license upon being hired.
  • Electrician Trade Certificate (license) and Electrician Construction Maintenance and Construction
  • Electronic Control from the Ontario College of Trades; Certification for traffic signals (International Municipal Signal Association - IMSA level 1 & 2); Advanced 170 Certification, Traffic Controller Programming
Specialized Knowledge:
  • You have knowledge of maintenance requirements associated with highway electrical devices and their support structures, sufficient to assess and determine the appropriate repair technique
  • You have knowledge of traffic management principles (related to signing, painting, illumination, traffic control devices etc.)
  • You have knowledge of highway construction principles, risk assessments and risk management principles to resolve issues and make recommendations
Technical Knowledge:
  • You have experience with contract administration, including administrative procedures, reporting requirements and documentation
  • You can prepare detailed cost estimates for proposed work
  • You are able to administer contract terms, and make recommendations with respect to contractor payment certificates
  • You are able to interpret and apply related regulations, policies and directives
  • You have knowledge of Ontario Electrical Code and its application
Communication, Supervisory and Interpersonal Skills:
  • You have effective communication skills to provide technical advice and recommendations
  • You have well developed written skills to prepare detailed cost estimates for proposed work
  • You have strong negotiation skills to deal effectively with contractors and consultants
  • You are able to deal effectively with ministry contacts and the public
  • You have supervisory and planning skills to direct and coordinate the activities of assigned ministry staff and contractors
Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills; Risk Management Knowledge:
  • You have analytical and problem-solving skills to assess engineering and construction and maintenance issues having financial impacts
  • You have knowledge of risk management principles and application, to make recommendations for issue resolution in the best interest of the ministry
