Position Summary
The recreation assistant plans, delivers, and evaluates leisure and enrichment programs that support residents’ psychosocial, physical, intellectual, and spiritual well-being. The role also supports recreation staff and volunteers.
Qualifications
- College diploma/university degree in recreation/activation, or psychology, sociology, or gerontology; recreation/activation certificate preferred but not required.
- Experience working with seniors, preferably in retirement or long-term care.
- Strong leadership, organization, creativity, motivation, and communication skills.
- Ability to motivate and engage residents, students, and volunteers.
- Knowledge of community resources and the Occupational Health and Safety Act is an asset.
- Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
- Valid driver’s licence if required.
- Flexible availability, including evenings and every other weekend.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with planning and delivering programs that meet residents’ needs.
- Involve residents in planning, delivering, and evaluating leisure, educational, and fundraising activities.
- Assess resident needs and maintain accurate documentation.
- Support volunteers and recreation staff as needed.
- Complete other assigned duties and follow all policies and procedures.
Job Requirements
- Police Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector Check, as required.
- Immunizations according to home policy, if applicable.
- TB testing.
Physical Demands
- Stand and walk during activities and events.
- Use stairs and walk short distances.
- Lift/move items or furniture up to 50 lbs.
- Bend/kneel and provide walking support to residents when required.
- Communicate and speak in front of groups as needed.
Safety & Risk Management
- Follow all safety procedures and use PPE when required.
- Immediately report accidents, incidents, hazards, and unsafe equipment.
- Follow infection prevention and control procedures.
- Participate in fire safety and mock disaster procedures.
