Job Title: Student Recreation Assistant – Senior Wellness and Grounds Support
Facility: Cherry Lane Manor Personal Care Home (20 Resident Capacity)

Role Overview
As a Student Recreation Assistant, you will design, coordinate, and lead engaging recreational activities for Level 1 seniors while also supporting the home’s outdoor environment. Your primary goal is to foster social interaction, stimulate cognitive function, and promote physical mobility in a warm, home-like setting. Also, you will assist with seasonal outdoor maintenance to ensure the grounds remain safe, tidy, and welcoming for residents and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
Recreation and Resident Engagement
- Activity Planning and Execution: Lead daily group and one-on-one activities tailored for Level 1 residents, including light stretching, gardening, trivia, crafts, and board games.
- Community Outings: Assist in coordinating and supervising small group walks and community outings.
- Resident Engagement: Build supportive relationships with residents, encourage participation, and adapt activities to individual interests and energy levels.
- Safety and Monitoring: Ensure a safe environment during all programs. Monitor residents for changes in wellbeing and report concerns to the Manager/Coordinator or staff on duty.
- Supply Management: Set up, sanitize, and store recreational equipment and supplies.
Grounds and Outdoor Maintenance
- Lawn Care: Mow grass, string-trim edges, and clear accumulated debris from walkways and outdoor areas.
- Garden Upkeep: Weed planting beds, deadhead flowers, lay mulch, and water hanging baskets or garden beds as needed.
- Plant and Walkway Maintenance: Maintain clear, safe walkways and ensure plants and shrubs remain trimmed away from siding and building entrances.
- Debris Removal: Rake leaves, pick up litter, and haul yard waste to designated disposal areas.
Other Duties
- Provide general support to the PCH Manager and staff as required.
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a college or university program (preferably in Therapeutic Recreation, Kinesiology, Nursing, or Social Work).
- Valid Standard First Aid and CPR Certification.
- Clear Vulnerable Sector / Criminal Record Check.
- High energy, empathy, and a strong passion for working with seniors.
Skills Needed
- Interpersonal Skills: Ability to communicate clearly and patiently with older adults.
- Adaptability: Capability to modify activities on the fly to suit resident moods or mobility levels.
- Group Facilitation: Comfort in leading small groups and maintaining an upbeat, positive environment.
- Outdoor Readiness: Willingness and physical ability to perform light-to-moderate outdoor maintenance tasks.
Work Conditions
- Hours: 35 hours/week. 8 hours/day for 8 weeks, June 22, 2026 – August 15, 2026.
- Environment: Intimate, 20-bed personal care home. Requires moderate physical activity, including standing, walking, outdoor work, and light lifting.
Pay: $16.35 per hour
