This role helps support the Sales Team to ensure they can focus on productivity rather than administrative tasks. The underwriter’s mandate will be to work with and assist mortgage agents, adjudicate mortgage applications according to internal policies and in line with current regulations, review all inbound documents and provide updated list of outstanding conditions to the agents. The Underwriter is responsible for structuring complex deals with recommendations to senior management. This role will be assuming responsibility for the mortgage administrative activities for the mortgage sales team and brokerage.
Responsibilities
Establish & maintain positive relationships with Clients, Lenders, External business partners and mortgage sales team
- Assist the mortgage sales team in the application process, obtain all pertinent personal and credit information from the client (directly or through the sales team member), also, collects the required documents and submit the application with the recommendation for approval
- Structuring complex deals
- Obtain approvals while ensuring borrower suitability
- Interact with Lenders to negotiate mortgage approvals
- Ensures completion of due diligence prior to sending to a lender
- Prioritize applications & workflow to ensure consistency in service level
- Remain up to date with lending guidelines, industry knowledge, competition & market trends
- Render approval/decline decisions on incoming applications consistent with internal and lenders guidelines
- Analyze employment profile, credit worthiness, property values, and all other information pertinent to the application, as presented by the client
- Negotiate mortgage terms (where applicable) to satisfy the interests of the client
- Verify supporting documentation for each application
- Verify accuracy of supporting employment, down payment, appraisal, and financial documentation received
- Correspond with lenders to attain outstanding documentation needed to complete requirements as outlined on the commitment to a “Broker Complete” status
- Develop and build relationships with existing and new lenders as per needed
- Maintain confidentiality of all client information and files at all times
- Manage, maintain and coordinate office referrals
- Assist in the training process for new and existing agents
- Manage and resolve any issues that arise from Mortgage Agents including complaints from underwriters and clients
- Manage and ensure FSCO policies and procedures are compiled by mortgage agents
- Provide input re: Review/performance reporting with Agents
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending industry workshops and training
