Position Summary
The Child and Youth Worker (CYW) provides direct care, supervision, and therapeutic support to children and youth residing at Ascentia House. The CYW promotes a safe, nurturing, and family-like environment while supporting each resident's physical, emotional, behavioural, educational, and cultural development. The position is responsible for implementing individualized Plans of Care using trauma-informed, strengths-based, culturally responsive, and person-centred practices in accordance with the Child, Youth and Family Services Act (CYFSA), Ontario regulations, MCCSS Quality Standards Framework, and Ascentia House policies.
Key Responsibilities
Direct Care:
- Provide continuous supervision and support to residents.
- Build positive, therapeutic relationships with children and youth.
- Maintain a safe, respectful, and inclusive living environment.
- Encourage independence, responsibility, and healthy decision-making.
- Model positive behaviour and appropriate social skills.
Care Planning:
- Implement each resident's individualized Plan of Care.
- Assist residents in achieving personal, educational, behavioural, and life-skill goals.
- Participate in case conferences and team meetings.
- Document observations and progress accurately.
Behavioural and Emotional Support:
- Use trauma-informed and therapeutic interventions.
- Support residents during emotional or behavioural crises.
- Apply approved behaviour support and de-escalation techniques.
- Promote emotional regulation and conflict resolution.
Daily Living Support:
- Assist with personal care when required.
- Prepare and supervise nutritious meals.
- Support school attendance and homework.
- Transport residents to appointments, school, recreation, and community activities.
- Teach daily living skills including cooking, budgeting, hygiene, laundry, and household responsibilities.
Health and Safety:
- Administer medications as prescribed and document administration.
- Monitor residents' physical and mental health.
- Respond appropriately to emergencies.
- Conduct room, safety, and wellness checks.
- Maintain infection prevention and control practices.
Documentation:
- Complete daily logs, shift reports, medication records, incident reports, and progress notes.
- Maintain confidentiality of resident information.
- Report concerns promptly to the Residential Care Manager.
- Collaborate with Children's Aid Societies, schools, healthcare providers, therapists, and community partners.
- Encourage participation in recreational, cultural, and community activities.
Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in Child and Youth Care, Social Service Work, Social Work, Psychology, or a related human services field.
- Experience working with children and youth in residential, community, or treatment settings is preferred.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed care, child development, crisis intervention, and behaviour support.
- Experience supporting children and youth with autism, developmental disabilities, FASD, mental health, and behavioural challenges is an asset.
- Valid Ontario driver's licence.
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR certification.
- Current Vulnerable Sector and Broad Record Check.
- Crisis intervention training (such as CPI or UMAB) is preferred.
- Be available for rotating day, evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday shifts.
- Ability to respond calmly during emergencies and behavioural crises.
- May require lifting, standing for extended periods, and participation in recreational activities.
