Hardscape Construction Crew Manager - Interlock, Stone & Retaining Walls
Lead hardscape crews that build clean, precise, long-lasting outdoor projects across Waterloo Region.
Company: Conestoga Contracting Group Inc
Location: Elmira, ON, with work across Waterloo Region and surrounding Ontario jobsites
Role type: Field leadership in hardscape construction/design-build
Is this you?
If you are the person crews look to when the job needs a plan, a pace, and a standard, this role is worth a conversation.
You likely fit if you:
- Take pride in hardscape work that is straight, level, clean, safe, and built to last.
- Have strong experience with interlock, natural stone, concrete pavers, steps, walls, grading, drainage, and base preparation.
- Can read plans, organize the crew, and keep materials, tools, and equipment ahead of the work.
- Understand that great hardscape starts below the surface: excavation, compaction, drainage, and base prep matter.
- Can coach people without being disrespectful.
- Speak up early when something will affect schedule, quality, safety, or scope.
- Like being measured by real outcomes, not just being busy.
The work
You will lead a hardscape construction crew on patios, walkways, driveways, pool surrounds, steps, retaining walls, stone features, grading, drainage, and design/build scopes.
Your job is to turn the estimate, drawings, job planner, and Project Manager direction into a clear daily plan the crew can execute safely and efficiently. You will lead morning huddles, assign roles, track production, protect quality hold points, keep the site organized, communicate with the PM, and help crew members improve.
This is a working leadership role. You are expected to lead from the field and work alongside the crew while still owning the plan, pace, safety, quality, and communication.
What you’ll lead
- Interlock patios, walkways, driveways, landings, and pool areas
- Natural stone and precast stone installation
- Retaining wall construction and wall base preparation
- Steps, coping, borders, edges, and transitions
- Excavation, grading, drainage, base installation, and compaction
- Bedding, screeding, cutting, jointing, polymeric sand, and final detailing
- Crew planning, daily task assignments, and production tracking
- Quality checks for line, grade, elevation, drainage, compaction, cuts, finish, and cleanup
- Communication with the Project Manager on delays, extras, client concerns, hidden conditions, and scope changes
What success looks like
- Jobs stay on budget: actual hours finish at or under the estimate, with controlled variance when scope is stable.
- Jobs finish on time: assigned jobs or phases hit schedule targets.
- Work is built right: base, drainage, compaction, layout, elevations, cuts, wall alignment, and finishes meet Conestoga standards.
- Rework stays low: quality issues are caught during the work, not after the final walkthrough.
- The crew gets better: crew members are trained, mentored, and coached in safety, pace, quality, and the Conestoga way of working.
- Problems are raised early: missing materials, unclear scope, hidden conditions, safety issues, and client requests are communicated same day.
Key responsibilities
- Lead daily hardscape crew execution from start to finish.
- Review job plans, drawings, estimates, safety risks, and production expectations before work begins.
- Assign crew members to clear tasks with timing, safety, and quality expectations.
- Check excavation depth, base thickness, compaction, drainage, layout, elevations, cuts, wall batter, caps, edges, and finish details.
- Train crew members on hardscape standards, safe tool use, proper equipment use, and site organization.
- Keep tools, trucks, trailers, equipment, materials, and subcontractor needs ahead of the crew.
- Track job progress and communicate schedule, budget, safety, scope, or quality concerns early.
- Ensure no extras, client-requested changes, or scope drift happen without approval.
- Keep jobsites clean, organized, safe, and client-ready.
- Represent Conestoga professionally with clients, teammates, subcontractors, and the public.
You may be a strong fit if you have
- Experience leading hardscape, landscape construction, masonry, concrete, or site construction crews.
- Strong working knowledge of interlock, stone, retaining walls, base prep, grading, drainage, and compaction.
- Ability to read drawings, site plans, elevations, estimates, or job planners.
- Experience operating or coordinating skid steers, compactors, saws, lasers, levels, trucks, trailers, and hardscape tools.
- Valid driver’s licence with an insurable driving record.
- Strong communication with crews, project managers, clients, and support teams.
- Pride in clean, safe, precise work.
