The Ponoka Wheelchair Van Society (which Ponoka FCSS manages) is currently accepting resumes for a Handi-Van Driver. The position is shared amongst other casual drivers, the ensure patrons arrive safely to medical appointments and social activities. In town shifts run weekdays as well as 2 Sundays per month. The intown van is often busy and therefore the successful applicant would be capable of prioritizing patron needs, safety and flexibility. The destinations of our out of town bus are often to medical appointments in locations such as Wetaskiwin, Red Deer, Edmonton and Calgary. During these trips, patrons take a family member, friend or volunteer with them, which allows drivers to remain focused on driving safely. Applicants must exemplify care and consideration when assisting the elderly and persons with disabilities with their transportation needs. Note: applicants must be aware the role requires 1. Functional Strength & Physical Stamina as handivan drivers physically assist passengers with mobility limitations. This may include,
- Heavy Lifting: Ability to lift, pull, and push between 50 to 100 pounds frequently throughout a shift to safely maneuver heavy manual and motorized wheelchairs
- Grip & Upper Body Strength: Required to safely lock, tighten, and secure 4-point wheelchair tie-down straps (floor securement systems) and passenger seatbelts.
- Mobility & Flexibility: Continuous bending, kneeling, crouching, and stooping in tight spaces inside the van to properly attach wheel clamps and floor restraints.
- Positional Endurance: Prolonged sitting while driving, alternating with rapid transitions to walking and standing while escorting passengers to and from building doorways.
You will also take bookings and complete light duty maintenance tasks such as sweeping out vans, completing pre-trips, completing necessary documentation .
Note: There is limited technology requirements however we do require basic cell phone abilities, operation of a point of sale machine, online timesheets and driver scheduling.
Training will include.
· Safe use and operation of vehicles
· Use of Safety Equipment
· Maintenance Program
· First Aid/CPR
· Relevant requirements of Traffic Safety Act including,
Hours or Service, daily trip inspection, and load securement (wheelchair and mobility devices)
- Technology training
The successful candidate will be required to provide:
- a copy of their current driver’s license and 5-year commercial drivers abstract as well as a medical certificate if appropriate (Our Handi-vans are 11 passenger and therefore require a minimum class 4 license)
