The Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Infectious Diseases in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Lab Technician. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
This position reports to the Principal Investigator.
This position involves technical research within the lab's experiments encompassing fluorescent microscopy, flow cytometry, basic molecular biology, genotyping transgenic mice, and managing animal colonies.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Data Acquisition and Research Implementation:
-
Accurate Data Acquisition: Ensure data collection is precise, organized, and reproducible

Research Proposal Implementation: Assist the PI to implement funded research proposals by adhering to project objectives and timelines
-
Development of Protocols: Assist in the development and implementation of animal care and project protocols
-
Research Methods Design: Collaborate with the Principal Investigator (PI) to design and implement research methods, including standard operating procedures and data collection protocols
-
Independent Research and Lab Support: Under the guidance and direction of the PI, conduct research projects independently, while assisting with the supervision of junior trainees as needed
-
Experiment Development: Under general supervision and direction of the PI, develop and implement experiments within the research guidelines

Laboratory and Technical Duties:
-
Laboratory Notebook: Maintain a daily laboratory notebook documenting all activities and research processes
-
Data Analysis and Reporting: Prepare weekly summaries, tables, and graphics of research results for project reports, posters, scientific presentations, and manuscripts

Statistical Assistance: Assist with statistical analyses of research data
-
Sample Analysis: Conduct analyses of various biological samples (e.g., tissues, blood, urine) and record findings

Technical Procedures: Provide semi-skilled to skilled technical procedures to support the research project

Collaboration and Training:
- Team Collaboration: Work effectively with PIs, technical staff, and trainees to achieve research goals

Training: Assist with training staff and students in laboratory equipment operation and laboratory protocols
-
Effective Relationships: Establish and maintain effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, immediate supervisor, senior management, and the campus community
-
Equipment and Safety Management:
- Laboratory Equipment Operation: Ensure reliable and safe operation of all laboratory equipment

Maintenance: Operate and maintain basic technical equipment, ensuring it is in good working order
-
Safety Compliance: Understand and comply with safety codes, standards, and systems related to specialization
-
Clean and Safe Work Environment: Keep the laboratory and work area clean and safe, adhering to all relevant health and safety guidelines
Qualifications / Requirements:
-
Bachelor's or in molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, or a related field
-
Master's degree is an asset
-
Minimum of 2 years of technical experience in a research specialty field
-
1 to 3 years of related technical experience
-
Experience with fixed sample or intravital microscopy
-
Proficient in molecular biology techniques and immunohistochemistry
-
Previous experience working with various biological samples (e.g., blood, tissues, urine)
-
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint)
-
Technical knowledge of fluorescent dye/protein labeling cell systems
-
Certifications: WHMIS and animal work certifications
-
Ability to manage time and projects effectively
-
Perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex technological systems
-
Strong communication, teamwork, and customer service skills
-
Ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines and a positive attitude
-
Open to learning and development, with willingness to accept new challenges
