The Linguistic Services team translates and revises various documents for clients as well as for the firm's business services. The associate director and lawyer-revisor works closely with the firm’s lawyers and clients, and less frequently with various business services colleagues across the firm.
Role
The Associate Director and Lawyer-Revisor revises the legal aspects of a range of French and English translations in various areas of the law. They will serve as a dual-qualified legal and linguistic expert, reviewing, editing, and occasionally translating specialized legal texts, such as securities, commercial contract, and financial market documents. They ensure consistency, precision, and legal accuracy, collaborating within a multidisciplinary team.
This is a senior role since this person is also in charge of the computer-assisted translation (CAT) software and tools and related vendor relationships for the department.
Additionally, this person also manages members of the team.
The role combines a deep understanding of the Linguistic Services mission within the firm with sound business acumen, proven managerial qualities and a solid understanding of the technological developments in the market.
This person must be willing to work outside regular business hours.
Key responsibilities
- Revise, from a legal standpoint, the French and English translations produced by the team for the firm's clients in order to provide a translation opinion, if necessary, in legal and financial areas and meet what are often very tight deadlines
- Provide translators with feedback and discusses same, as needed
- Be the contact person in the absence of the director, linguistic services leader for all aspects of service management
- Manage complex client files, including
- Receiving client requests, negotiating and establishing billable fees and providing client service from beginning to end of file
- Coordinating the translation mandates with translators, proofreaders and assistants until the work is delivered to the client
- Liaising with clients, other mandate stakeholders and lawyers within the firm
- Liaising with freelancers and external service providers
- Taking responsibility for the decisions pertaining to the processes, the legal terminology to be used and the budget for the matter
- Being the contact for the client during the performance of the matter
- Billing hours as per the established client budget
- Stay abreast of the new tools and technological developments in the translation industry; explore the related opportunities and costs and prepare reports on the subject for the director
- Take the role of business lead in any technology-related project involving other business services and stakeholders
- Spearhead the implementation and use of the technological tools within the department
- Coordinate the related training
- Be the main contact for vendors of our translation tools
Leadership responsibilities:
Manage members of the linguistic teams reporting to him or her, coaching and mentoring revisors on the team and advise them as needed.
Other responsibilities include:
- Dealing with client requests that usually include extremely tight deadlines
- Communicating with clients about translation issues or problems
- Understanding the process from start to finish to ensure the smooth execution of mandates
- Knowing how to organize a team and manage the deadlines assigned to each team member
- Representing the firm professionally in his or her communications and way of being
- Remaining calm under pressure to keep the team engaged and reassured
- Demonstrating persuasiveness within the team to ensure the mandates’ success
- Effectively managing the changes and uncertainty brought about by technological innovations
- Being convincing to ensure successful implementation of new work methods or processes as they relate to technology
- Being able to play a pivotal role as business lead during any project management process
- Being able to discuss new developments with vendors
- Coordinating with freelancers and outside translation providers, if necessary, during busy periods
- Staying abreast of new legislation and regulations, especially in the area of securities
Skills and experience required
- Member of the Québec Bar for at least 10 years
- Excellent command of French and English
- Being able to value difference and promote a culture of respect for each individual
- Strong and unwavering focus on language quality, clarity and accuracy
- Strong business and political acumen
- Sound grasp of the financing, accounting and securities sectors
- Proven curiosity for tools used and new developments in the translation industry
- Tact and persuasiveness in dealing with other departments and stakeholders and vendors
- Ability to work under pressure and outside regular business hours
- Ability to manage a team seamlessly, with equanimity and self-confidence
- Strong communication skills, both internal and external
- Team player, detail-oriented, thorough and organized
- Superior interpersonal and client management skills
- Possess collaborative and superior relationship-building skills
- Demonstrated curiosity about the tools used and the advances made in the translation sector
- Experience as a revisor in a structured firm, a definite asset
- Ability to switch from administrative work to review work efficiently and in a timely manner
