About NordSpace
NordSpace (https://nordspace.com) is a Canadian startup with the mission to advance life on Earth, from space. NordSpace is committed to extremely rapid innovation and development of the most ambitious aerospace projects with the most ambitious team. With divisions spanning everything from space robotics to satellites to rockets, NordSpace is driven to bring space closer to Earth and inspire generations of space explorers.
Role purpose:
As a Junior Mechanical Engineer, you will support the design, analysis, testing and improvement of mechanical components and systems, working closely with our senior engineers to bring products from concept to production. This is a great opportunity for a motivated individual, early in their career who is looking for hands-on experience in a challenging environment. You will support one or many mechanical engineering areas of work spanning our rocket and space systems divisions.
Core responsibilities
- Assist in designing, modeling, and drafting mechanical components and assemblies using Fusion 360, SolidWorks, and NX.
- Build and assemble physical prototypes in-house, and iterate based on testing and validation results.
- Support engineering analysis, including tolerance stack-ups, stress calculations, and FEA
- Prepare technical drawings, BOMs, and specifications for internal fabrication or external vendors.
- Support root-cause analysis and troubleshooting for existing products or processes
- Participate in parts sourcing and supplier discussions with an eye for lead times, cost, and design-for-manufacture trade-offs.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (electrical, manufacturing, quality) to resolve design issues
- Document design decisions, test results, and engineering changes clearly and consistently.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field
- 0–2 years of professional experience (internships and co-ops count)
- Proficiency with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, NX, or similar)
- Solid understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals: statics, dynamics, thermodynamics, materials science.
- Demonstrable experience building physical things, whether through internships, engineering design teams, personal projects, or research.
- Familiarity with GD&T and design for manufacture.
- Comfortable working in an environment where requirements shift, timelines are tight, and the answer isn't always in a textbook.
- Genuine passion for space exploration and a desire to work on hardware that operates in extreme environments.
- Experience with sheet metal design, machined parts, or composite structures is an asset.
- Exposure to FEA tools (Ansys, Fusion Simulation, or similar) beyond coursework is an asset.
- Experience in a leadership role on an engineering design team is an asset.
