As part of our collaborative Taxation team, the Indirect Tax Manager leads the full commodity tax function for the organization. You'll oversee monthly and annual tax compliance, ensure adherence to federal and provincial indirect tax legislation, support tax audits, and provide trusted tax advisory across the organization.
You'll also play a key role in upcoming cross-training between the direct and indirect tax streams, contribute to tax projects during the new billing system implementation, and act as a subject matter expert for both business partners and senior leadership. This hybrid Toronto-based role reports directly to the VP and collaborates closely with other leaders and the broader Finance and Reporting teams.
Principal tasks and responsibilities include:
- Oversee monthly and annual tax compliance
- Ensure adherence to federal and provincial indirect tax legislation
- Support tax audits and commodity tax audits
- Provide trusted tax advisory across the organization
- Contribute to tax projects during the new billing system implementation
- Participate in cross-training between direct and indirect tax streams
- Act as a subject matter expert for business partners and senior leadership
- Collaborate closely with Finance and Reporting teams
- Communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical partners
- Provide thoughtful analysis, identify issues, and offer practical alternatives
- Build collaborative relationships across Finance and the business
- Exercise sound judgment and support teammates with a positive, growth-minded approach
Qualifications and pre-requisites:
- 5+ years of experience in accounting and taxation, with strong specialization in indirect tax
- 2+ years of supervisory experience in a financial unit
- CPA designation preferred, or a master's degree/equivalent experience
- Financial services experience preferred
- Strong knowledge of provincial and federal indirect tax legislation
- Experience with monthly/annual returns, SAM calculations, and audits
- Experience supporting or managing commodity tax audits
- Understanding of insurance accounting, including premiums, claims, statutory overdue, collections, reinsurance, and related controls
- Strong analytical abilities and mathematical aptitude (ratings, formulae, percentages)
- Advanced Excel and solid Microsoft Office skills
- Familiarity with tax, accounting, or insurance systems
