About Us:
Founded in 1963, the Choralairs of North York is a vibrant, non-auditioned SATB community choir of approximately 45 members dedicated to "Singing for Seniors." We bring the joy of music directly into our community, performing 6 to 8 one-hour concerts per season at local long-term care facilities, retirement residences, and seniors' centres.
We are a warm, welcoming ensemble who value bringing music to seniors in an atmosphere of strong social bonds, laughter, and community fellowship that make our choir a family. Following the retirement of our long-serving co-directors, we are seeking an inspiring, community-minded Musical Director and an Accompanist for our upcoming season starting September 2026.
The Role:
Working as a supportive partner to our new Musical Director, the Accompanist is a critical safety net for our singers. Our entire commitment takes place strictly on Tuesday evenings, covering weekly rehearsals (6:45-8:45PM), 6 to 8 senior facility concerts, and our annual Friends & Family public concert in early June.
Key duties include delivering rhythmically accurate, engaging piano accompaniment across genres like Broadway show tunes, folk music, and pop standards from the 1940s to the 1970s, Our holiday concerts focus on Christmas and Hanukkah repertoire. Responsibilities include playing individual and multiple vocal lines to reinforce member learning.
Key Responsibilities:
- Accompany all Tuesday evening rehearsals and Tuesday evening concerts.
- Provide strong rhythmic and stylistic support for popular music genres, swing, jazz-adjacent standards, and musical theatre styles.
- Emphasize individual voice parts (SATB) on demand to support learning during rehearsals.
- Ability to stand in on occasion for the Musical Director and lead the choir in rehearsal in the event the Musical Director is absent
- Maintain an open, collaborative relationship with the Musical Director and a warm demeanor with choir members.
Qualifications:
- Successfully completed a degree or certificate in advanced musical performance from a recognized post-secondary institution.
- Exceptional piano proficiency with excellent sight-reading and open-score reading capabilities.
- Comfort and experience playing pop, show tunes, and light jazz/swing styles with a great sense of groove and steady tempo.
- A patient, adaptive, and friendly personality suited for a lively, highly social community-first ensemble.
- Absolute availability on Tuesday evenings from September to early June.
