Lead Residential Designer / Architectural Designer (Maternity Leave Coverage)

About the Role
TQ Construction is seeking an experienced Lead Residential Designer / Architectural Designer to join our award‑winning team for a maternity leave contract (12 months). This is a pivotal, client‑facing role suited for a senior‑level designer who thrives on leading projects from concept through completion, coordinating multidisciplinary teams, and generating elevated design solutions for high-end residential renovations and custom homes.
As the Lead Residential Designer, you will guide creative direction, mentor junior team members, and ensure that every project reflects TQ’s commitment to quality, innovation, and exceptional client care.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Design Leadership & Project Delivery
- Lead residential design projects from initial client interview through concept development, design documentation, and project close-out.
- Develop space plans, conceptual designs, color schemes, and material palettes aligned with client needs and project goals.
- Create feasibility studies, design proposals, sketches, and 3D renderings.
- Translate client requirements into clear design briefs and provide expert guidance throughout the project lifecycle.
- Ensure all designs meet building safety codes, municipal permitting requirements, and budget targets.
Technical & Documentation
- Produce detailed design drawings, working drawings, and construction documentation with precision and accuracy.
- Review shop drawings, tender packages, and all design-related contract administration documentation.
- Coordinate with production teams, architects, engineers, contractors, and consultants to deliver cohesive and timely project solutions.
Client Engagement & Communication
- Lead client-facing presentations that convey design intent clearly and compellingly.
- Provide design recommendations for finishes, fixtures, millwork, and furnishings.
- Offer practical guidance on budget alignment, timelines, and design feasibility.
- Maintain strong relationships that uphold TQ’s reputation for outstanding client experience.
Project Management & Coordination
- Manage project budgets, schedules, and resources in collaboration with internal teams.
- Track design hours and maintain accurate project documentation.
- Support procurement efforts including specifying, sourcing, and coordinating materials, products, and vendor services.
- Assist in project start kits, file organization, and project administration.
Team Collaboration & Culture
- Strong communication across all internal and external team members
- Contribute to continuous improvement, industry research, and best practices.
- Support business development initiatives including identifying new opportunities and positively representing TQ Construction.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
- 5+ years professional design experience, ideally with focus on high-end residential renovations or custom home design.
- Architectural design experience is preferred
- 3+ years local industry experience in British Columbia (required).
- Post-secondary diploma or degree in Interior Design or Architecture from an accredited institution.
- Strong proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit
- Extensive knowledge of BC building codes, permitting processes, construction methodologies, and design coordination.
- Proven experience preparing construction documents, tender packages, and managing contract administration tasks.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Strong time management, problem-solving, and organizational capabilities.
- A collaborative attitude with a passion for great design and client care.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle
- Legally entitled to work in Canada
