Shafts and Tunnels is looking for an experienced part-time HSSE Advisor to support our projects, field teams, and ongoing health, safety, security, and environmental programs.
This role is well suited to an experienced HSSE professional who understands the realities of working on active mine sites and is comfortable moving between the field and the office. The successful candidate will provide practical, hands-on HSSE support, participate on site rotations as required, and work closely with our project and leadership teams to help maintain a strong safety culture across the organization.
This is a part-time position with a combination of: scheduled on-site rotations and project visits, office-based HSSE support, and additional support based on project and operational requirements.
The schedule will vary depending on active projects and company needs, so flexibility is important. This role is intended for someone who wants to remain actively involved in the industry and in the field while working on a part-time basis.
Key Responsibilities :
- Provide hands-on HSSE support to project teams and field personnel at active mine and construction sites.
- Complete scheduled site rotations and visits to support ongoing project activities.
- Conduct workplace inspections, observations, audits, and hazard assessments.
- Support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of company HSSE programs, procedures, and safe work practices.
- Participate in incident investigations and assist with identifying root causes and corrective actions.
- Support project teams with job hazard analyses, field-level risk assessments, and other site-specific safety requirements.
- Assist with employee and contractor orientations, toolbox talks, safety meetings, and other training initiatives.
- Review HSSE documentation and help ensure project and site requirements are being consistently followed.
- Work with supervisors and employees to address safety concerns and identify practical solutions.
- Assist with regulatory, client, and internal HSSE reporting and documentation.
- Support emergency preparedness and response planning as required.
- Spend scheduled time in our office supporting documentation, program development, planning, reporting, and other HSSE initiatives.
- Help reinforce a workplace culture built around planning, communication, accountability, and looking out for one another.
Requirements:
- 5–10+ years of progressive HSSE experience within the mining industry.
- A valid drivers license.
- Strong experience working directly on active mine sites and supporting field operations.
- A solid understanding of mining, underground construction, and/or heavy industrial work environments.
- National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) designation is preferred.
- Additional occupational health and safety education, certification, or professional designation is considered an asset.
- Experience supporting underground mining, shaft sinking, tunnelling, or other specialized mining construction activities would be considered an asset.
- Experience working with contractor management systems, client HSSE requirements, and project-specific safety programs is an asset.
- Demonstrated experience with hazard identification, risk assessments, inspections, incident investigations, and corrective action management.
- Knowledge of applicable occupational health and safety legislation, regulations, and industry best practices.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with employees, supervisors, project managers, clients, and contractors.
- The confidence to provide guidance and raise concerns when required, while maintaining a practical and collaborative approach.
- Strong organizational and documentation skills.
- The ability and willingness to travel and complete on-site rotations as required by project needs.
- The ability to work independently while remaining closely connected with project and management teams.

Pay: $41.00-$62.00 per hour
