Shift Leader Job Description
Role:
As a Shift Leader at Shelter, you are responsible for ensuring smooth execution of service during your scheduled shift. You are expected to maintain a strong leadership presence on the floor, mentor and support the team whenever possible, hold staff accountable to Shelter’s practices and procedures, and ensure exceptional guest experiences are consistently delivered. Your goal is to create lasting, meaningful moments for our guests while fostering a positive work environment that inspires growth, ownership, and empowerment.
Key Areas of Responsibility
- Maintain overall presence on the floor, ensuring every guests leave happy; address and resolve guest complaints to the best of your ability.
- Oversee all service operations during your shift, including opening and closing procedures; guide and mentor service staff to ensure all tasks and duties are completed to Shelter standards.
- Set and maintain the vibe and atmosphere, including music, lighting, candles, torches, TVs, and fireplaces, ensuring everything is prepared in a timely manner.
- Ensure clear and consistent communication between the management team and other Shift Leaders.
- Lead and engage in staff development and mentorship; be available to support the team throughout service.
- Maintain and develop operational systems, including checklists and training processes.
- Record and relay information on any incidents in the incident log.
- Support efficient and thorough training of new staff.
- Maintain clear communication with the BOH team when necessary.
- Ensure execution of all current and new systems, policies, and protocols.
- Stay aware of sales volumes by reviewing the log book and understanding sales patterns, previous cuts, and expected flow of service.
- Ensure labour is within budget; make appropriate cuts without compromising service standards, taking action when necessary.
- Handle unexpected events (e.g., music or technical issues, “squirrel” corrections) calmly and effectively.
- Act as a point of contact with external agencies such as bylaw officers, health inspectors, and liquor inspectors, ensuring Shelter remains compliant with all operational requirements (e.g., incident log, SIR numbers, liquor license).
Shift Responsibilities
- Hold staff accountable for punctuality and participation in pre-shift briefings.
- Complete the briefing sheet with all relevant information for the shift.
- Assign sections fairly based on experience, Z-Card status, and scheduling needs; rotate sections daily where possible.
- Review reservations and assign to tables if necessary; print and check the TRM stayover report.
- Ensure music levels and TV channels are appropriate in all areas of the restaurant.
- Identify and record any maintenance issues.
- Ensure washrooms are checked frequently and maintained.
- Communicate 86s, promos, and other updates clearly to the team throughout the shift.
- Handle and log squirrel corrections and other adjustments as required.
- Direct servers to productive tasks during downtime; ensure side duties are completed.
- Maintain the cleanliness and organization of server stations and side duty areas.
- Float through the restaurant, touch tables, and create standout guest moments to leave a lasting impression.
- Support all service areas of the restaurant, including bartenders, hosts, bussers, and servers.
- Monitor labour in real time and make appropriate cuts without sacrificing guest experience.
- Monitor inventory and note items running low or out of stock.
- Log or escalate cleaning and maintenance issues as needed.
Compensation
- Low Season (Mid October – Mid May): $20/hour plus $12/hour tip pool gratuities.
- High Season (Mid May – Mid October):$20/hour plus $22/hour tip pool gratuities.
