The Quality Management in Clinical Research Unit is seeking a Health Outcomes Research Analyst with expertise in real world evidence. The incumbent will physically work within the QMCR office and report directly to the Director of Clinical Operations, Associate Dean of Clinical/Translational Research and the Assistant Dean, Health Outcomes Research in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, University of Alberta.

The incumbent will support researchers and stakeholders in collecting, transforming, linking, and analyzing real world health data to develop research projects and proposals to ultimately help physicians and policy makers make more informed health care decisions.


Provides support to the Real World Evidence Unit
Analyzes, interprets and summarizes complex health data in response to a variety of requests
Develops standardized health information products (e.g., statistical tables as well as descriptive and comparative analysis of population demographics, disease prevalence and trends, health status) to support needs of the Unit
Confirms data specifications and plans data extractions
Understands data set availability in and outside of the province and identify opportunities for use of real world evidence and health outcomes research
Performs and documents specific data extraction and transformation processes including writing computer programs such as Python or statistical programming languages (such as SAS) languages to perform data processes or analysis, as needed
Conducts the process of data transformation to meet required data specifications and apply basic statistical analyses as required in the transformation process
Provides analytics support to academic and health system stakeholders
Interprets data; provides context and meaning to data
Transforms data into high quality information
Summarizes complex data and displays the big picture in an effective manner
Creates meaningful, highly-aggregated and easy to understand information for reports, presentations, and research proposals
Leads project teams to prepare health information/knowledge products
Establishes and maintains effective linkages and ongoing communication with internal and external information requestors, and provides expert advice to strengthen methodology used in health outcomes and real world evidence research studies
Leads virtual research teams and brings subject matter experts together, as required, to collaborate on analytic information/data requests
Prepares reports, presentations and status updates, as required, to communicate to the relevant stakeholder

Minimum Bachelor's degree in Science (e.g. biostatistics, data science, epidemiology, health informatics, health sciences, public health or health services, or equivalent); Master's preferred
Minimum 3 years of progressively responsible related experience to the analysis of health data, including expertise with data analysis, management, and linking of datasets
Understanding of health data assets in Alberta, and knowledge of research design and methodology for administrative health data analysis
Excellent skills with Python or statistical programming languages (such as SAS) is essential to work with health data repositories in Alberta
Ability to coordinate and manage large diverse analytic projects
Strong organizational and time management skills to meet deadlines and the challenges associated with this position
Ability to work independently or as part of a team
Ability to effectively manage internal and external data resources to achieve the project goal
Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills
