This is a specialized payroll position. Applicants must have direct payroll administration experience. Preference will be given to candidates with fisherman payroll, crew-share payroll, vessel settlements, fisheries accounting, or seafood industry payroll experience. Who We Are Looking For
We are seeking an experienced Fisherman Settlements & Payroll Specialist to join our accounting team in Sydney, Nova Scotia.
This is a specialized position responsible for the accurate and timely processing of fisherman settlements, crew-share calculations, advances, deductions, and payroll-related activities for a year-round seafood operation.
Our operation includes lobster, snow crab, groundfish, shrimp and whelk, with settlement activity continuing throughout the year and varying by species and fishing season.
The successful candidate will have strong payroll and accounting experience, exceptional attention to detail, and the ability to manage detailed settlement calculations while meeting deadlines throughout the year.
Key Responsibilities
· Daily communication with our inshore fleet captains is required.
· Process fisherman payroll and crew share calculations accurately and on schedule.
· Maintain earnings records for fish harvesters and crew members.
· Process payroll deductions, source deductions, and government remittances.
· Coordinate with vessel captains, owners, and shore-side operations staff.
· Reconcile payroll accounts and prepare supporting documentation.
· Maintain confidentiality of employee and harvester information.
· Reconcile accounts receivable and apply chargebacks for fuel, bait, ice, gear and advances.
· Assist with month-end accounting procedures.
· Respond to payroll and settlement inquiries.
· Ensure compliance with CRA, labour legislation, and fisheries payroll requirements.
· Track advances given to independent fishers.
· Calculate insurable earnings under specific EI fishing regulations.
Qualifications:
· Minimum 2 years of hands-on payroll processing experience.
· Previous experience processing fisherman settlements, crew-share payments, commercial fishing payroll, or similar industry-specific compensation is strongly recommended.
· Strong understanding of payroll calculations, deductions, remittances, reconciliations, and payroll reporting.
· Demonstrated ability to work with detailed financial information and identify discrepancies.
· Strong Excel skills.
· Experience with Sage 300 ERP is an asset.
· Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
· Strong organizational and time-management skills.
· Ability to work independently while meeting firm deadlines.
· Ability to maintain confidentiality when handling payroll and financial information.
