Role Overview
The U.S. Tax Manager plays a key leadership role within the U.S. Tax division, overseeing client engagements, managing staff, and ensuring the timely delivery of high-quality tax compliance and advisory services. This role involves close collaboration with partners, mentoring team members, and contributing to the continued growth and development of the practice.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manage and review U.S. federal and state tax returns for individuals, corporations, trusts, and estates, including complex engagements.
- Oversee the preparation and review of supporting workpapers to ensure compliance with firm methodology and professional standards.
- Lead U.S. tax compliance engagements, including Forms 1040, 1040-NR, 1120, 1120-F, 5471, 5472, 8621, FinCEN 114, 3520, and 3520-A.
- Review and provide guidance on U.S. estate and gift tax filings (Forms 706-NA and 709), where applicable.
- Conduct and review tax research related to U.S. federal and international tax matters, including PFICs, Subpart F, and GILTI, and communicate conclusions to partners and clients.
- Serve as a primary point of contact for clients, addressing tax questions, managing expectations, and maintaining strong client relationships.
- Manage engagement timelines, staffing, and deliverables to ensure deadlines are met.
- Review and respond to IRS and state tax authority notices and correspondence.
- Support new client onboarding, including scoping, information gathering, and establishing compliance processes.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements, efficiency gains, and best practices within the U.S. Tax division.
- Train, mentor, and supervise associates and senior associates, including reviewing work and providing performance feedback.
- Assist partners with practice management initiatives, including workflow planning and resource allocation.
Requirements
- Undergraduate degree in Accounting and/or equivalent years of professional experience.
- Master’s degree in Accounting and/or U.S. CPA or EA designation is considered an asset.
- 5+ years of progressive experience in U.S. tax within a public accounting firm with 2 years in a leadership position.
- Strong experience reviewing and preparing U.S. individual tax returns (Forms 1040 and 1040-NR), Corporate Tax Returns (Forms 1120 and 1120-F) and Partnership Returns (form 1065).
- Demonstrated experience managing U.S. international tax reporting, including:
- PFIC rules and reporting (Form 8621)
- Subpart F and GILTI provisions
- Foreign reporting forms (5471, 5472, FinCEN 114)
- U.S. trust reporting (Forms 3520 and 3520-A)
- Experience reviewing U.S. corporate tax returns (Forms 1120 and 1120-F) required.
- Experience with U.S. estate and gift tax filings is an asset.
- Knowledge of Canadian tax legislation is an asset.
- Proficiency with professional U.S. tax preparation software; GoSystem experience is an asset.
- Strong leadership, communication, and client management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple engagements and deadlines in a professional services environment.
