Perfect Skating, founded by Shawn Allard (former Skating and Skills Coach of the Colorado Avalanche, and current personal performance coach to many of the NHL's top players), is seeking an ambitious, ex or current hockey player to help continue building our brand and programs in Calgary.
The Perfect Skating methodology has been used by 350+ NHL players, and thousands of minor hockey athletes. After starting in Ontario, we have been in the Alberta market for approximately 4 years. Edmonton was our first targeted area in Alberta for significant program growth. In that time we have been very well received in the community, and continue to see explosive growth in the market, establishing ourselves as a market leader in player development. Now we are shifting our focus to growing our programming in the Calgary and Area market. Because of this, we are looking to add a full time staff member to our team.
The successful candidate will be developed into a world leading expert in coaching players in the art of skating, skill, and hockey performance development. They will be an important part of building the Perfect Skating brand in the Calgary market.
Qualifications:
- Former Professional Player or College/ Junior player
- Experience coaching and passionate about constantly developing to get better at their craft. Significant training and support will be provided, but a successful candidate will be expected to be able to lead Programs and Team Development Sessions at a high level, within 30 days of starting.
- Ability to currently keep up on the ice with our elite athletes in order to assess movement patterns, interact, pass, pressure etc. For example, a successful candidate should currently have skating ability that would allow them to keep up with a Junior A/ WHL hockey player. That candidate would then go through extensive training to learn and coach our movement methodology.
- The ability to communicate well with athletes and their parents/guardians is important. Our programs typically allow a maximum of 12 athletes on the ice, and coaches are expected to consistently connect with, and chat with athletes and their guardians before or after sessions to discuss progress, areas of focus, etc.
- Strong leadership skills. Experience/ comfortability managing staff, scheduling, and conducting performance reviews is important. Just like the coach or captain of a hockey team, your ability to continue to develop and grow those under your guidance will be important to your success.
- Basic computer skills (word, excel etc.)
- Strong organization and time management skills
- Bonus but not necessary: Kinesiology, or Personal Training education
Hours:
Fall, Winter & Spring
The successful candidate will work approximately 40-44 hours per week. They will typically be on the ice anywhere from 15-22 hours per week. The remainder of their work time each week will consist of session planning and drill design, training and development, staff communication and related management tasks, travel between arena locations, and basic administrative tasks.
Hours will vary each week, and work life balance is always a important consideration. However candidates should expect some evening and weekend work.
Summer (July and August)
Full time staff will work approximately 40-44 hours per week. They will typically be on the ice for 20-25 hours per week, Monday - Friday. The majority of these hours will be during the day, however may vary based on the needs of the business. The remainder of work time each week will consist of session planning and drill design, staff communication and related management tasks, and travel between arena locations.
Pay Type: Salary (Full Time)
Pay Range and Compensation:
As a new full time coach to our Calgary team, starting pay for this position ranges from $55000- $80000 per year, depending on credentials and experience. This will be a combination of base salary and performance bonuses.
The successful candidate should also expect significant growth opportunity based on performance. This may lead to significant compensation increases over time, potentially including profit sharing.
An equipment allowance will also be included (sticks, skates, gloves, helmet).
