Science North’s vision is to be the leader among science centres in providing inspirational, educational and entertaining science experiences. As Canada’s second largest science centre, Science North operates a multi-faceted operation in Sudbury, Ontario along with programs throughout Northern Ontario and a thriving International Sales business.

Science North is currently recruiting for a Director of Education & Northern Programs with a passion for leading Science North’s presence in Northern Ontario by developing and directing the Education and Northern programs strategy and driving high quality science experiences across Northern Ontario. In this role, you will be at the forefront of expanding and deepening Science North’s engagement with Indigenous audiences across the North and building partnerships to support programs in First Nation communities. With your entrepreneurial spirit, you will be instrumental in building partnerships and collaborations, impactful formal and informal learning programs and innovative approaches to growing audiences and participation across Northern Ontario to truly make Science North, Northern Ontario’s science centre.

Reporting directly to the CEO, and overseeing a team of education and program experts, the Director of Education and Northern Programs will:

Set and direct the strategic initiatives for Education and Northern Programs
sets and drives the Education and Northern Programs strategy, establishing measurable financial, participation and learning goals as well as participation and community reach targets
executes the overall Education and Northern Programs strategy and leads the tactics required to meet those goals and achieves desired results
prepares reports and presentations to Science Program Committee and Science North Board of Trustees related to Education and Northern Program Initiatives and works with the Indigenous Advisory Committees in regards to experiences for Indigenous audiences and integration of cultural elements in our science centres
Drive program development, innovative implementation and delivery locally and across the North
leads the team delivering science experiences to Northern Ontario through school programs, camps, workshops, outreach, customized experiences and other specialty programs
oversees the development and implementation high-quality school programs and specialty experiences that serve the school audience at Science North and Dynamic Earth
leads the permanent and short-term Science North partner-driven experiences in Northern Ontario attractions
oversees the development and implementation of educational and informal programs, workshops and customized experiences to Indigenous audiences

Oversee the day to day operation of the Education and Northern Programs unit
responsible for overall operation of the Education and Northern Programs team including the Thunder Bay satellite base

Participate as a member of the senior executive team
participates in the overall management direction of the Centre – setting strategy, developing operational plans, monitoring, supporting and/or driving innovation and adjusting plans as needed
liaises with/hosts government officials, politicians, clients and members of the media

Promote Science North within and outside the community
leads the centre’s communication with the Northern educational community, Northern stakeholders and potential partners
establishes Science North’s presence in Northern Ontario by creating links with the Northern Ontario stakeholders including but not limited to: educational professionals and organizations. Civic, Provincial and Federal officials, the private sector, scientific organizations, attractions, museums, First Nation communities and other community partners as well other support bodies


University graduate with a degree in science or education or related field
Minimum 7-10 years experience in program development, implementation and evaluation experience, preferably involving Northern Ontario audiences and First Nation communities (at least 5 years in a senior leadership position)
Experience in setting strategic goals and leading team to achieve targets
Proven experience in building and maintaining strong partnerships and collaborations that support operations and maximize positive impact
Excellent interpersonal skills and proven ability to develop and maintain complex multi-level relationships with corporate partners, individual donors, volunteer boards, committees, peers and support staff
Ability to effectively articulate the mission, strategic vision and values of the organization to a wide range of internal & external constituents
Ability to drive innovation, provide leadership in creative solution to challenges or opportunities.
Superior organizational, communication (written and verbal), presentation and analytical skills
Demonstrated ability to lead a team of professionals, and strong planning, staffing and budget management experience
Confidence and ability to manage multiple tasks within established deadlines
Proven ability to take initiative, lead and work effectively as part of a team
Fully bilingual in both English and French

Salary starting at $86,562 per year
