Purpose: To ensure a profitable, organized and smoothly-run Fresh Department; to ensure department staff provide friendly and efficient service; to support the mission, vision and policies of Community Natural Foods.
Status: Full-time, salaried management position. Reports to Store Manager.

- Previous management experience
- Previous experience with fresh grocery (produce, meat, dairy)
- Ability to work well with others in a fast paced environment

Knowledge
- Maintain all required food safe handling certification and standards
- Knowledge of the natural foods industry

Physical Demands
- Frequent walking, kneeling, standing, squatting, bending, reaching overhead, lifting 25-50lbs

Responsibilities
Customer Service
- Treat internal and external customers fairly, consistently and with respect
- Ensure efficient and friendly service from department staff
- Ensure department staff receives proper training
- Provide product information and educational materials to customers and staff
- Investigate and respond to customer requests
Communications
- Communicates honestly, openly and respectfully with everyone in the organization
- Stays informed by reading and responding to all forms of communication from others; emails, Teams, texts
- Communicates needs promptly and efficiently
- Resolves conflicts promptly; asks for assistance as needed
Leadership and Supervision
- Manage all aspects of the operations of the department, based on organizational standards and goals
- Ensure departmental plans and goals are implemented
- Attend, and participate in all regularly scheduled meetings
- Hold regularly scheduled team meetings
- Treat staff with consistency and fairness
Human Relations
- Adhere to and enforce all conditions of employment in compliance with provincial employment laws and the personnel policy manual
- Work with HR Manager to implement training materials and systems
- Take frequent opportunities to notice good work, using positive reinforcement
- Take initiative to identify and resolve problems before they escalate
- Conduct coaching, counseling and other disciplinary actions
- Work with HR to conduct investigations of complaints or grievances
- Ensure terminations are handled legally and professionally
Department Operations
- Working knowledge of and ability to perform all department functions
- Ensure that all food is efficiently and accurately produced
- Ensure displays and shelves are stocked, rotated and fronted
- Ensure that product condition meets department standards
- Ensure that un-sellable items are properly disposed
- Ensure appropriate inventory levels of department supplies
- Ensure equipment is maintained and properly serviced. Advise Store Manager of equipment repair/replacement needs
- Ensure daily communications of all operational issues
- Set daily priorities for supervisory staff to ensure productive work flow
- Work with the Store Manager to develop, revise and enforce department’s standard operating procedures
- Implement and oversee systems for inventory procedures
- Develop and implement systems to maintain accurate records of product cost, production and loss
- Perform all other duties as assigned by Store Manager.
Purchasing
- Purchase for department according to company guidelines
- Ensure adequate supply and selection of products
- Ensure accurate price labeling of products
- Communicate changes in order times and deadlines to Store Manager
Personnel
- Follow and enforce performance standards for department staff
- Schedule staff according to established weekly labor budget
- Arrange for coverage of vacant shifts and fill in as needed
- Participate in hiring process
- Conduct timely evaluations of staff
- Perform disciplinary actions using required document procedures
- Ensure daily communications of on-going operational issues
- Schedule and conduct regular team meetings
- Communicate necessary terminations to HR Manager
Sanitation and Safety
- Ensure employee standards of safety
- Ensure that department displays, coolers, work and storage areas, and sales floor are clean and orderly
- Ensure department meets all AHS requirements
- Ensure proper food handling and preparation
- Ensure that all required department staff have up to date required training
