MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:
- High school completion with job‑related options plus two years = directly-related experience.
OR
- Completion of a Community College course in a related discipline with no experience.
- Some post secondary education is preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
- Experience performing molecular biology tasks including protein extractions, protein quantification, western blot analysis and imaging are required.
- Experience with tissue culture particularly culture of human cells is required.
- Experience with animal handling, breeding, and monitoring is required.
- Experience with PCR and mouse genotyping is required.
- Experience maintaining general lab equipment and performing general day-to-day lab maintenance is required.
- Experience training staff and students in laboratory techniques and protocols is an asset.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Effective oral and written communication skills are required.
- Organizational skills, thoroughness, accuracy and attention to detail are required.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software is required (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
- Working knowledge of statistical analysis software would be an asset (i.e. Excel, R.).
- Ability to learn new laboratory techniques and perform them accurately is required.
- Good manual dexterity and good eyesight is required.
- Ability to resolve and troubleshoot simple technical problems with basic lab equipment is required.
- Must have a philosophy that is compatible with animal-based research.
- Must be well organized and capable of keeping detailed lab notes, records and data management.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team is required.
- Ability to train staff and students in laboratory techniques and protocols is required.
- Demonstrated technical skills in either molecular biology or animal husbandry is preferred.
- Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
Laboratory organization:
- Maintains cell stocks.
- Coordinates with core facilities as needed.
- Perform general lab maintenance, including maintaining stock solutions.
- Arranges lab duties to keep the lab clean and organized, and communicates to the Investigator on completions of lab duties.
Laboratory experiments:
- Performs experiments using mice and cell culture in consultation with the Investigator
- Assists students with experiments using small rodents, maintaining and monitoring experimental animals, and assisting with necropsies to collect tissues.
- Process tissues for embedding in paraffin.
- Section tissues using a microtome; conduct histology or immunohistochemistry as required.
- Uses PCR to analyse DNA for genotyping mice.
- Isolates protein extracts from mouse tissues and human cells for use protein detection by western analysis.
- Conduct immunocytochemistry experiments for protein localization experiments.
- Perform fluorescence and/or confocal microscopy and capture high quality digital images for subsequent analyses.
- Perform statistical analyses to analyze data generated from relevant experiments.
- Standardizes, adapts and performs new experimental techniques as required for both in vitro and in vivo studies.
- Maintain up-to-date and accurate lab book (or online Benchling) of daily experiments and results.
- A satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
