Director of Procurement – Compressed Gas Division
Company: TerraVest Industries
Location: Crossfield, AB.
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent | In-office
Reports To: President, Compressed Gas & Sr. VP of Procurement
About the Role
TerraVest's Compressed Gas Division is looking for a Director of Procurement to lead our purchasing function across seven manufacturing facilities and five service locations in Canada and the USA. This division spans everything from high-mix, low-volume fabrication of trucks, trailers, and bulk storage tanks to high-volume production lines for domestic storage tanks and refurbishment.
Steel is our largest procurement spend, and this role owns mill-direct and warehouse steel buying end to end — forecasting, supplier relationships, quality, and market strategy — alongside LPG parts, truck/trailer parts, inventory management, and cost savings initiatives across the division.
This is a hands-on, high-visibility role reporting directly to our President and Sr. VP of Procurement, with the opportunity to shape procurement strategy across a diverse set of independently run businesses.
What You'll Do
- Directly manage and approve all mill steel procurement; oversee warehouse steel purchases and ensure ordering processes are followed
- Build and maintain yearly steel purchasing forecasts, adjusting for changes in manufacturing demand
- Track macro steel market trends and coordinate volumes, timing, and terms with mill suppliers accordingly
- Own strategic supplier relationships, master agreement negotiation, and pricing across steel, LPG parts, and truck/trailer parts categories
- Partner with plant buyers and business unit General Managers to keep purchasing decisions and inventory levels consistent across the division (without direct authority over the team)
- Lead inventory reduction and turnover initiatives, working with each business unit to develop strategies suited to their product mix and cycles
- Identify and lead cost-saving initiatives, building business cases and reporting realized savings to executive management
- Build and present procurement dashboards and reporting for executive leadership; be a power user of our inventory database
- Collaborate with sister divisions to find purchasing synergies with shared vendors
What You Bring
- Significant experience in purchasing leadership or strategic procurement, including managing or influencing a team
- Direct experience buying steel from mills is strongly preferred — you know plate grades, mill lead times, and how to read the market
- Proven track record negotiating master agreements and managing strategic supplier relationships
- A genuinely analytical, hands-on approach — comfortable pulling and mining your own data in Excel/ERP systems and turning it into a clear recommendation, not just a report someone else built for you
- Experience operating across multiple business units or a decentralized, multi-plant environment is a strong asset
- Strong understanding of inventory management, working capital, and total cost models
- Excellent communication skills and the political acumen to align stakeholders across independently run business units who don't always see eye to eye
- Low ego, high accountability — someone who treats company money like their own and leads by example
A Note on the Environment
Our operating companies run independently, which gives this role real influence but also real complexity: data isn't always centralized, and getting accurate, real-time numbers across business units takes initiative and problem-solving. We're looking for someone who sees that as a challenge worth digging into, not a blocker.
Why TerraVest
TerraVest is a fast-growing company, expanding largely through acquisition — and procurement synergies are a core part of our acquisition thesis, which means this function is central to how we grow, not an afterthought. That growth creates a steady stream of new challenges and real opportunity for career advancement: our current Director of Procurement for this division is being promoted to lead one of our operating companies, which is the role this posting is back filling.
