The Utilities department has an opportunity for qualified individuals to apply for the position of Utilities Labourer 1. Reporting to the Wastewater Chief Operator, this position offers 76.5 hours bi-weekly starting as soon as possible through to December 31, 2026.
The Utilities Labourer 1 will assist the Utilities team in the operation, repair and maintenance of the water distribution, wastewater treatment and wastewater collection operating systems including; driving a truck to transport tools, equipment, materials and staff to and from job sites; brush clearing on utility installations such as wastewater treatment facility, sewer lift stations, landfill gas flare, and landfill leachate; performs traffic control “flagging” duties at jobsites; performs routine cleaning and painting of utility installations; assists in the inspection of sanitary sewer manholes; and will be assigned other related tasks. Frequently performs work outdoors in all weather conditions and is required to perform night work at times. Work may be wet, dirty, malodorous, and physically confined.
Qualified candidates will possess a grade 12 education supplemented by 2 years of experience as a labourer in a construction or maintenance environment preferably in the field of utility maintenance and/or utility construction. Candidates must have some knowledge of the methods, techniques, materials, tools, and equipment used in construction, maintenance and repair of Municipal water distribution and wastewater collection systems and have previous experience with the use of a variety of hand and power tools. Candidates must also have some computer literacy/familiarity with MS Word, MS Excel, Outlook email and calendar programs and must possess sufficient strength, stamina, and coordination to allow the performance of medium to heavy manual duties in all weather conditions.
The successful applicant demonstrates the ability to maintain good housekeeping standards at jobsites, stations, shops, and office areas, and demonstrates a commitment to promoting a diverse and inclusive workplace to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, other employees, and the public. As a requirement of the position, the successful applicant must hold a valid class 5 BC driver’s license and provide a satisfactory driver’s abstract prior to beginning employment.
This position works 76.5 hours biweekly at a rate of $32.91 per hour. Employees in the Utilities Department normally work a schedule consisting of eight days of work in a fourteen-day period. Each day of work shall be 10 hours exclusive of a one-half (1/2) hour lunch period.
