About Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind (CGDB)
Founded in 1984, Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind (CGDB) is a non-profit organization that provides Canadians with greater mobility and independence through the use of professionally trained guide dogs (nationally) and mobility assistance dogs (Ottawa area). Based out of Manotick (Ottawa), Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind is a charter member of the International Guide Dog Federation and internationally recognized as a guide dog school and a member of Assistance Dogs International.
Job Summary
The Controller oversees all finance and accounting operations including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, budgeting, and financial reporting and analysis. This posting is for a new position. This is a full-time, in-office role, five days per week. The organization operates 365 days per year, and flexibility is required for occasional evenings and weekends.
This is a hands-on role requiring involvement across all areas of accounting, including AP, AR, payroll, and supporting operational needs across the organization. Over time, this role may take on increasing responsibility for more accounting functions as part of long-term succession planning.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for daily accounting operations including general ledger, AP, AR, fixed assets, and cash management
- Prepare and analyze financial data, reports, and month-end results, including action planning
- Complete monthly tax remittances and ensure all filings and returns are completed on time
- Prepare and distribute monthly financial reports to the COO and support cash flow monitoring
- Coordinate audits and support forecasting with the COO and Financial Consultant
- Maintain and improve internal controls, processes, and documentation
- Manage donations and bookkeeping staff and support onboarding of new employees
- Support payroll processing and oversee ADP and Ezlabor systems
- Assist with property-related financial tracking including maintenance and repairs
- Complete annual returns for both business and charity
- Provide support to the COO and Financial Consultant, including special projects and additional duties as required
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business, along with a CPA designation
- Seven or more years of progressive accounting experience
- Experience working in a Canadian charity environment is required
- Experience with financial audits, compliance, and regulatory requirements
- Strong working knowledge of payroll processes and systems
- Experience with QuickBooks Online, Microsoft Office, and financial systems including RBC Edge
- Familiarity with Raisers Edge is considered an asset
- Strong communication, customer service, and time management skills
- Comfortable overseeing property-related maintenance and repairs
- Comfortable working in an environment with dogs and able to provide proof of recent Tetanus vaccination
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary range: $80,000 to $100,000
