Job Overview
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Shop Foreman to lead our maintenance and repair operations for heavy equipment and machinery. In this vital role, you will oversee daily shop activities, coordinate maintenance schedules, supervise technicians, and ensure all equipment is operating at peak performance. Your expertise will drive efficiency, safety, and quality across our fleet of construction machinery. The Shop Foreman works closely with management, parts personnel, and operators to maximize equipment uptime and maintain a productive work environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise, schedule, and coordinate daily activities of heavy equipment technicians and shop personnel.
- Assign work orders based on technician skill level, workload, and equipment priorities.
- Ensure repairs, diagnostics, preventative maintenance, and inspections are completed accurately and on schedule.
- Monitor shop productivity, quality of work, and adherence to company standards.
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting assistance for complex mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic issues.
- Inspect completed repairs to verify quality and compliance with safety requirements.
- Promote and enforce all company safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Conduct daily toolbox meetings and communicate safety expectations.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, repair documentation, and work orders.
- Coordinate with the Parts Department to ensure timely availability of required parts and materials.
- Monitor equipment downtime and recommend improvements to increase reliability and efficiency.
- Assist with planning and scheduling preventative maintenance programs.
- Train, mentor, and evaluate technicians while supporting ongoing skills development.
- Participate in hiring, onboarding, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions as required.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment.
- Support emergency repair work and after-hours response when operational needs require.
Qualifications
- Journeyperson Heavy Equipment Technician certification or equivalent experience preferred.
- Minimum 5–7 years of heavy equipment maintenance experience.
- Previous supervisory or leadership experience in a heavy equipment or fleet maintenance environment.
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, drivetrains, and heavy equipment diagnostics.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and service information.
- Proficiency with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and basic computer applications.

Working Conditions
- Primarily based in a heavy equipment maintenance shop with regular exposure to noise, dust, grease, and varying weather conditions.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, and use of tools and diagnostic equipment.
- May require overtime, weekend work, or on-call availability to support operational requirements.
Reporting Relationship
Reports to: Equipment Manager / Fleet Manager
Supervises: Heavy Equipment Technicians, Apprentices, Shop Helpers, and other assigned shop personnel.
