Role Summary
Reporting to the Manager of Therapeutic Services & Volunteer Services, the Therapeutic Recreation Activity Worker is a skilled clinical, evidenced based, professional responsible for recreation programming. They are accountable for the delivery of wellness, recreation, and leisure services offered to residents. The TRAW plays a pivotal role in the delivery and evaluation of therapeutic services interventions, based on the needs, wants and physical, mental and psychosocial well-being of residents, in the context of resident centred care delivered in an interprofessional approach
Qualifications
- Two year post secondary diploma in Therapeutic Recreation (Required).
- Certified in 1st aid and CPR (required or willing to obtain).
- Proficient in the use of MS office applications (required).
- Proficient in the use of MDS-RAI 2.0 (or willing to be trained).
- Valid Class 4 Drivers License (or be willing and eligible to apply for same).
- Applicants must be willing to work various shifts, short notice, evenings, weekends and holidays.
- Applicants required to lift and handle materials up to 50LBS.
- Educated in use of proper Body Mechanics to ensure safety procedures for transferring of residents (required or willing to obtain).
- Maintain an active membership with the Nova Scotia Therapeutic Recreation Association.
The following would be considered assets:
- Bachelor's Degree in Recreation or Leisure Studies
- 3 to 5 years of recent, related clinical and operational experience in a health care environment, preferably in a long-term care setting
- Gerontology Certificate/Course
- Dementia Care course
- Public presentation skills
Performance Requirements
- Assists in the implementation and operation of diversified recreation programs and services in accordance with residents' needs and interests.
- Places focus on programs based on an emotional, intellectual, physical, social, therapeutic, and spiritual needs.
- Conducts activity programs in a variety of settings, such as large groups, small groups, and one-to-one based activities.
- Maintains proper level of care for equipment and curriculum supplies including setting up and cleaning up of programs.
- Manages time effectively by planning and coordinating all duties related to programming for the week.
- Encouraging and motivational towards resident independence, attendance of programs and socialization.
- Maintains accurate electronic database of therapeutic services offered to residents daily.
- Able to follow direction and perform other duties deemed necessary by the Manager of Therapeutic Services.
- Inclusive with these responsibilities are ensuring that the Mission, Values and Visions of Seaview Manor appropriately meet Long Term Care safety and environmental standards.
- Provide one-to-one daily resident care and behavioural redirection intervention(s) as needed.
- Apply literature and/or research on physical and behavioural redirection interventions
- Demonstrate both physical and mental capabilities in performing the required duties as Activity worker, outlined in the Activity Worker role description.
- Demonstrate job stability as evidenced by maintaining a good attendance record.
- Team player, collaborating with other members of the Resident Care team. Therapeutic Recreation Activity Workers are responsible for providing safe, effective and ethical care which is resident focused and reflective each resident defined unique needs.
- Exhibit leadership qualities and work with minimal supervision. Required to perform all tours of duty.
