The NACC Personal Support Worker (PSW) Instructor plays a vital role in preparing aspiring PSWs through engaging and comprehensive classroom instruction. This position involves delivering educational content, mentoring students, and fostering a supportive learning environment to ensure students acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in their careers. The instructor will utilize their expertise in personal support work and teaching to inspire and guide future healthcare professionals, contributing to the development of a competent and compassionate workforce.
Responsibilities
- Deliver high-quality classroom, laboratory, and evaluation instruction for all theory, skills, and assessment components of the NACC-approved PSW curriculum in accordance with Ministry of Colleges and Universities (MCU) and NACC standards.
- Develop and deliver engaging lesson plans, instructional materials, demonstrations, and assessments aligned with curriculum outcomes, NACC requirements, and college policies.
- Facilitate hands-on lab training that reflects safe, ethical, and professional personal support care practices, ensuring students achieve required PSW competencies.
- Use diverse, student-centred and active-learning strategies such as demonstrations, case studies, group discussions, role play, simulations, and practical lab activities to support varied learning styles.
- Apply adult learning principles to effectively engage, motivate, and support a diverse student population.
- Provide real-world examples, current best practices, and up-to-date PSW industry knowledge to enhance learning relevance and application.
- Assess student learning through quizzes, assignments, exams, practical demonstrations, and competency evaluations in a fair, consistent, and timely manner.
- Provide clear, constructive, and supportive feedback to promote student growth, confidence, and clinical competence.
- Maintain accurate and timely records of attendance, grades, evaluations, and student progress in compliance with college policies and NACC requirements.
- Monitor student performance and identify learners requiring additional support, providing mentorship, guidance, and remedial assistance where needed.
- Address student questions, concerns, and academic issues professionally, empathetically, and in a solution-focused manner.
- Maintain a safe, organized, and compliant classroom and lab environment, ensuring proper use, care, and storage of equipment and supplies.
- Ensure strict adherence to infection prevention and control standards, safety protocols, and institutional policies during all instructional activities.
- Collaborate with program coordinators and academic leadership to align instruction with program outcomes and support continuous program improvement.
- Participate in meetings, training sessions, program reviews, audits, inspections, and institutional events such as graduation.
- Collect and review student feedback to support ongoing improvement of course delivery, instructional materials, and teaching effectiveness.
- Maintain confidentiality of student records and comply with all institutional, ethical, and regulatory requirements.
- Engage in ongoing professional development to remain current with PSW practices, healthcare standards, and instructional methodologies.
- Foster a positive, inclusive, respectful, and supportive learning environment that encourages active participation and student success.
- Demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement in all aspects of instructional delivery.
- Perform other related duties as required to support the effective delivery and success of the PSW program and the College.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated experience teaching or facilitating learning in an online environment using a Learning Management System (LMS).
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with strong active listening abilities.
- Compassionate, empathetic, and respectful approach when working with students, clients, and colleagues.
- Ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team.
- Flexibility and adaptability in responding to different situations, learning needs, and client requirements.
- Basic knowledge of health and safety principles and regulations related to caregiving is an asset.
- Previous experience in caregiving, personal support, healthcare, or related support roles is an asset but not required.
- Demonstrates patience, reliability, professionalism, and respect for individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Moodle/Learning Management Systems, and database systems.
- Professional appearance and strong interpersonal and mentoring skills, with the ability to serve as a positive role model for students.
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries, confidentiality, and a supportive learning environment.
Qualifications
- Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) or Registered Nurse (RN) with current, unrestricted registration and good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO);
- Minimum of four (4) years of recent and relevant clinical experience in a Canadian healthcare setting, preferably in long-term care, community care, or chronic care.
- Minimum of two (2) years of recent teaching, training, or instructional experience.
- Meets instructor qualification requirements outlined in the Regulations to the Ontario Career Colleges Act, 2005.
- Familiarity with Private Career Colleges and experience working with adult learners is considered an asset.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to professional integrity, high-quality education, and student success.
