ASSISTANT CONTROLLER -Saskatoon, SK.
Our client is seeking an experienced, high-performing Assistant Controller to join their team. Reporting directly to the Controller, the successful candidate will play a crucial role in managing, creating, and performing full-cycle accounting, payroll, and financial reporting across a multi-entity group of companies with advanced complexity. The Assistant Controller will lead efficient month-end processes, perform peer reviews, execute quality checks, offer guidance and feedback, foster cross-departmental collaboration, and maintain operational oversight to work with a high level of independence, ensuring a positive, accurate, and smooth flow of accounting operations that enhances overall financial performance.
The ideal candidate will be an efficient, detailed financial professional with a strong background in multi-company accounting, payroll compliance, and an elevated understanding of construction and property management accounting practices to navigate financial complexities.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Include but are not limited to:
- Performing, creating, and processing accounts payable and accounts receivable with high accuracy, preparing payments (EFT, online, cheque runs), managing Pre-Authorized Debits, generating payable summaries, and maintaining accurate bank deposits and GL allocations.
- Executing efficient month-end and year-end procedures, preparing journal entries, conducting bank and intercompany loan reconciliations, developing fixed asset and depreciation calculations, and assisting with the financial closeout of construction projects.
- Leading operational oversight, performing peer reviews, executing rigorous quality checks, and delivering training, guidance, and constructive feedback to team members to ensure continuous improvement and accuracy.
- Preparing, creating, developing, and generating monthly, quarterly, annual, and ad hoc financial reports (income statements, balance sheets, mortgage balance tracking, and unsold sales reports) that enhance executive decision-making.
- Preparing, calculating, and disbursing wages, bonuses, statutory pay, source deductions, T4s, and ROEs while ensuring strict legal compliance, accuracy, and employee privacy.
- Preparing GST and PST filings, coordinating with external parties to register new CRA accounts, and sourcing student grant funding opportunities.
- Interfacing and coordinating across teams to support company strategic priorities, while proactively identifying and resolving operational tasks to maintain seamless workflows.
- Promoting a culture of safety and compliance, leading by example, and maintaining compliance with all health and safety regulations.
Knowledge & Skills Required
Include but are not limited to:
- Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field from an accredited post-secondary institution, is preferred; or currently working towards a diploma or degree.
- Minimum of 5 years of proven accounting-related experience handling elevated financial complexities, including at least 1 year of full-cycle payroll experience.
- Strong working knowledge of GAAP and a solid understanding of construction accounting, project sequencing, and property rental accounting functions.
- High proficiency with accounting, payroll, and project management software (such as Sage, Yardi, and Construction Online) alongside Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
- Experience with Lean principles/Lean Construction Institute (LCI) certification and relevant safety certifications (WHMIS, First Aid) are considered strong assets.
- Exceptional attention to detail, strong peer-review and organizational skills, and the demonstrated ability to work with a high level of independence under minimal supervision.
- Valid driver’s license, personal transportation for occasional local travel (e.g., bank deposits), and legal authorization to work in Canada are required.
