Job Summary
As a Security Agent at the Students’ Society of McGill University (SSMU), your primary responsibility is to ensure the safety and security of all individuals across SSMU venues, including the student bar and internal event spaces, while strictly adhering to the Quebec Security Agent Code of Conduct. You will enforce legal requirements regarding alcohol, intoxication, and conduct, and maintain SSMU policies with professionalism, integrity, and legal compliance. In this unique student environment, your role also involves balancing strict adherence to regulations with a respectful, approachable demeanor that fosters a safe, inclusive atmosphere. By utilizing effective conflict de-escalation, harm reduction strategies, and proactive communication, you will prioritize the well-being of students, ensuring that safety is maintained without compromising the positive, welcoming environment SSMU strives to create. You are expected to uphold the law while remaining mindful of the distinct needs and culture of a student-focused community.
Responsibilities
Ensure Safety & Security
- Maintain a safe and secure environment for patrons, staff, and performers across SSMU venues, including the student bar and event spaces, while promoting a welcoming atmosphere.
- Monitor entry points, check IDs, and enforce age restrictions in compliance with Quebec’s alcohol regulations.
- Enforce house policies and provincial regulations regarding intoxication, disorderly conduct, and illegal substances, using discretion where appropriate, given the student environment.
- Promote harm reduction strategies, including recognizing signs of overconsumption and assisting patrons in distress, prioritizing student safety over punitive measures.
- Respond to incidents such as disturbances, medical emergencies, or unauthorized individuals, following established protocols with a focus on student well-being and conflict resolution.
- Document incidents accurately and submit reports to management and authorities as required.
- Cooperate with local law enforcement or emergency responders as needed, acting as an intermediary to protect student interests.
- Perform routine security checks of all venues, including washrooms, exits, and restricted areas, while respecting student privacy and campus culture.
- Report maintenance or safety concerns to management to ensure a secure and functional environment across all SSMU venues and facilities.
- Get information by observing, receiving, and obtaining relevant details to stay proactive in ensuring safety and compliance.
Conflict Management & De-escalation
- Engage with students in a respectful and supportive manner, fostering trust and approachability in security interactions.
- Identify and de-escalate potential conflicts using appropriate communication techniques, prioritizing mediation and harm reduction strategies over force.
- Use sound judgment to resolve situations while remaining professional and respectful.
Event Security Support
- Provide security support for a variety of SSMU events, such as student gatherings, conferences, and private bookings, emphasizing a safe and inclusive space.
- Collaborate with bar staff, event organizers, the Events Department and Building Department to ensure smooth and safe experiences for guests.
- Assist in crowd control, manage line-ups, and prevent overcrowding while prioritizing accessibility and comfort.
- Preventative Security Measures
- Perform routine security checks of all venues, including washrooms, exits, and restricted areas, while respecting student privacy.
- Monitor and authorize the entrance and exit of patrons, visitors, and others to prevent alcohol in non-permit areas, theft, and ensure security of premises.
- Patrol corporate and commercial premises to detect and prevent signs of intrusion.
- Perform pat-downs when necessary to assist in the screening of individuals and prevent prohibited items from entering permit areas.
General Security & Operations
- Circulate among visitors, patrons, and employees to preserve order and protect property.
- Respond to alarms and investigate disturbances, involving police or fire departments when necessary.
- To maintain a proactive nature to aid in the ability to communicate withindividuals of rule violations and/or prevent illegal or disorderly acts. Agents should be prepared to evict violators, using force only as a last resort when necessary.
- Perform general physical activities such as climbing, lifting, and handling materials, necessary to maintain safety within venues.
Other Responsibilities
- Adhere to the Quebec Security Agent Code of Conduct, maintaining professionalism, integrity, confidentiality, and legal compliance while prioritizing the rights and safety of all individuals.
- Participate in regular training on conflict resolution, harm reduction, and security protocols tailored to the student environment.
- Maintain knowledge of Quebec’s Private Security Act and alcohol-related regulations (Régie des alcools, des courses et des jeux du Québec), balancing compliance with student engagement.
- Engage with students in a respectful and supportive manner, fostering trust and approachability in security interactions.
- Promote harm reduction strategies, including recognizing signs of overconsumption and assisting patrons in distress.
- Report maintenance or safety concerns to management to ensure secure and functional event spaces.
Qualifications Required
- 1 year of previous experience in bar, event, or venue security.
- Valid Security Guard Permit issued by the Bureau de la sécurité privée (BSP) in Quebec.
- Completion of the mandatory 70-hour security guard training recognized by BSP.
- Valid CPR and First Aid certification.
- High school diploma required; post-secondary education is an asset.
- Strong proficiency in both French and English (reading, writing, and verbal communication).
- Familiarity with harm reduction approaches and the student environment.
- Ability to remain calm and professional in high-pressure situations.
- Strong interpersonal, customer service and active listening communication skills to interact effectively with students and staff.
- Knowledge of public safety and security, including relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies.
- Understanding of law and government, including legal codes, court procedures, and provincial regulations related to security operations.
- Ability to proactively assess situations and respond appropriately to ensure safety and compliance.
- Must be able to lift and carry or otherwise move 30 pounds occasionally
Preferred Qualifications
- Training in nonviolent crisis intervention or mediation.
- Experience working in dynamic and fast-paced environments requiring adaptability and problem-solving
Confidentiality
It is understood and agreed that all matters to the SSMU and those clubs association or groups forming part of the SSMU are to be kept in the strictest of confidence, and nothing regarding the operations, policies and general activities of the SSMU or its constituent groups shall be divulged to any third party without the express consent of the General Manager and/or the Executive Committee of the SSMU.
Pay: $21.00 per hour
