Overview:
Trade Smart College provides opportunities for students and talent for companies. Professionalism is at the heart of our program, ensuring our students have the skills that trades companies demand from entry-level employees.
We are looking for one part-time instructor to help deliver the professional skills in our program to approximately 120 students per year. The instructor will work with other staff at the college to create a premium training experience for students and employers, based around the foundational skills required in the trades.
The content of the professional skills courses focuses on resume and interview preparation, business perspectives and building trust, habits and routines, decision-making, quality work, mindsets and personal performance.
Position Description:
The Part-Time Instructor - Professional Skills is responsible for delivering 2-3 classes per day, afternoons from Monday to Friday, and to provide support to students during their paid internships. All classes are delivered in-person, and student support during internships is managed virtually. Success for this position consists of helping students build their professional skills in class and have those new abilities translate into superior internship experiences. The instructor must work collaboratively with other instructors and members of the College team to ensure that the curriculum is meeting employer needs, and that students are succeeding in the program.
Responsibilities:
Work with other instructor(s) to deliver the in-class portion of the curriculum to 6 student cohorts per year. This involves in-class teaching, weekly student evaluation, marking assignments, and general course administration.
Administer the weekly check-in process with students while on internship to help troubleshoot issues.
Support the logistics of the student experience for all students, accepting teaching assignments and internship supervision/coaching duties from the Student Success Manager to balance workloads.
Adjust curriculum in consultation with the College team.
Work with the College team to reach out to non-traditional populations for trades education.
Engage in research to improve the curriculum as necessary.
Qualifications:
Must be able to fit seamlessly into the existing College team.
Must learn the employer-focused vs the discipline-focused nature of the College curriculum.
Must have demonstrable ability to coach, mentor, and teach professional skills to adults.
Must have excellent interpersonal skills, in person and in written correspondence.
Must have a proactive approach to the position.
Must be comfortable with taking initiative and using good judgement.
Must have a growth mindset and be willing to give and accept criticism so that all members of the college can improve.
Must meet the following Ministry regulations to be qualified as an instructor:
48 months of work or teaching experience in the vocation, acquired within the preceding 10 years, or a combination of the two. OR 24 months of work or teaching experience in the vocation, acquired within the preceding 10 years, or a combination of the two and one of the following:
Hold a Bachelor’s Degree from a Canadian university or an equivalent degree
Be a graduate of a College of Applied Arts and Technology or equivalent
Be a graduate of a registered Career College or equivalent
Hold a Certificate of Qualification under the Ontario College of Trades and Apprenticeship Act, 2009 or equivalent.
All instructors are required to provide two letters of reference from individuals of no relation verifying the work/teaching experience in the discipline to which you are applying.
Schedule:
Monday to Friday afternoons, with occasional mornings or full days
