We are seeking a passionate Mechanical Designer with a minimum of 4 years of expertise in custom machinery mechanical design, particularly within the automation industry. The ideal candidate will possess comprehensive knowledge of pneumatics, specification of components such as motors, actuators, and conveyors, along with proficiency in structural analysis (FEA), GD&T, and the use of robot arms in combination with various applications. Hands-on prototyping skills, experience in SolidWorks, and familiarity with SolidWorks PDM are essential for this role.
Responsibilities:
1. Custom Machinery Design
Develop innovative mechanical designs for custom machinery projects within the automation industry, ensuring alignment with project specifications, regulatory requirements, and industry standards.
2. Pneumatics and Component Specification:
Utilize expertise in pneumatics to specify and select components such as motors, actuators, and conveyors, optimizing performance, reliability, and efficiency in machinery design.
3. Structural Analysis (FEA)
Conduct rigorous structural analysis using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools to validate designs and ensure they meet required standards for strength, durability, and performance.
4. GD&T Implementation
Implement Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles to accurately define and communicate design requirements in 2D drawings and models.
5. Use of Robot Arms
Integrate robot arms into mechanical designs and applications, leveraging their capabilities to enhance automation processes and system functionalities effectively.
6. Hands-on Prototyping
Engage in hands-on prototyping activities to validate design concepts, troubleshoot issues, and refine mechanical designs for optimal functionality and manufacturability.
7. SolidWorks Proficiency
Demonstrate proficiency in SolidWorks to create detailed 3D models, assemblies, and drawings for mechanical components and systems, adhering to engineering standards and best practices.
8. SolidWorks PDM Knowledge
Effectively manage design data using SolidWorks PDM, ensuring version control, collaboration, and documentation standards are maintained throughout the design process.
9. Preparation of 2D Drawings
Generate accurate 2D drawings following engineering standards, including GD&T and tolerancing, to communicate design intent effectively and facilitate manufacturing processes.
10. Conduct Design Review Sessions:
Lead or participate in design review sessions to evaluate designs, gather feedback, and incorporate necessary changes to optimize performance, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness.
11. Experience in Manufacturing Environment
Leverage experience in a manufacturing environment to optimize designs for manufacturability, assembly and integration, collaborating closely with production teams to ensure seamless execution.
12. Assembly and Evaluation of Mechanical Prototypes
- Oversee the assembly and evaluation of mechanical prototypes, conducting thorough testing and analysis to validate design integrity and functionality.
13. Lean Manufacturing Continuous Improvement
- Implement lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies to streamline processes, minimize waste, and enhance efficiency in design and manufacturing operations.
14. Collaboration with Controls and Process Specialists
- Work collaboratively with controls and process specialists to integrate mechanical designs seamlessly with control systems and manufacturing processes, ensuring cohesive and optimized solutions.
15. Proactive and Passionate about Automation
Demonstrate a proactive approach and passion for automation, staying abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, industry 4.0 and best practices to drive innovation and excellence in mechanical design solutions.
Qualification:
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field.
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in custom machinery.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM.
- Strong knowledge of pneumatics, specification of components and structural analysis (FEA)
- Experience with the use of robot arms in combination with various applications.
- Hands-on prototyping experience and familiarity with prototyping tools and techniques.
- Understanding of lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and adapt to dynamic project requirements.
Working Conditions and Requirements:
- Lifting and/or carrying anywhere from 10lbs to 75lbs.
- Operate primarily in an office and plant environment.
- Use standard office equipment such as laptop computers, 3D printers, and smartphones.
- Working in an office environment with possible local travel requirements.
- Needs to be comfortable working in a manufacturing production floor at times.
- Pressure to produce tangible results and complete projects within tight timelines.
- Requires a high degree of attention to detail and the ability to multi-task.
- Valid Driver’s License
- Ability to travel between facility locations as required.
- Weekend Availability required on occasions.
