Job Title: R&D Test Engineer(ing) - HVAC
Reports To: Validation Manager
Job Purpose:
Responsible for development, validation and certification testing of new products for suitability to release in to the market, including functionality, compliance to government and regulatory standards, efficiency, aesthetics, robust performance, design for installation, design for service and accuracy of technical documentation. Prepares documentation for approval of products for release in to the market.
Provides technical leadership to a team of test technicians and specialists to support product development team in fabrication, assembly, testing and validation of prototypes and pre-production samples. Prepares validation and certification plans and schedules resources, equipment and outside services, (including certification agencies where applicable.) Works with Product Engineering to develop and maintain stage gate timelines for production readiness. Assists manager with departmental business plan to meet company objectives.
Collaborates closely with technical specialist(s) to improve product quality, understanding and investigating current production and field issues, collaborating with QA and Production to analyze data trends, perform root cause analysis undertaking testing where necessary and working with cross functional stakeholders to improve current products.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provides technical leadership for testing and validation. Ensures team correctly complete physical set-up, testing and analysis to ensure accuracy, repeatability and compliance to requirements and where applicable conducts necessary hands on training. Use Engineering principles and analytical methods to evaluate and identify risks in early product development stages, to reduce testing time and cost, and to predict product performance, application range and reliability.
- Supports manager with the overall planning, scheduling, executing and reporting the evaluation of all new HVAC products, (furnace, air conditioners, heat pumps), with respect to suitability for launch in close collaboration with Lab Coordinator and Product Engineer(ing). Including but not limited to; aesthetics and appearance, fit and finish, performance, efficiency, safety, functionality, robustness, installation and service. Provides recommendation for rejection, approval or changes in a structured and objective manner, balancing risk versus return, (i.e. consequences of product launch delay).
- Designs DVP's, (Design Validation Plans), appropriate to each stage of product development HVAC products based on own knowledge, testing standards, industry and Wolf Steel best practices, as well as certification requirements from 3rd party agency. Use Customer Solutions field data to understand real world concerns and ensure validation tests are in place to address them.
- Actively participates in the design reviews for new products, and supports Product Engineering for optimization of design for manufacturing, service and installation during development, including analysis of similar products, recommendations for improvement based on lessons learned.
- Supports manager to ensure adequate scheduling, task assignment and execution of product validation and certification plans for timely completion. Prepare all necessary testing documentation packages for submission to 3rd party agency to ensure certification, listing etc. are achieved on time.
- Prepares own reports, reviews and approves engineering, technical and test reports created by testing team. Defines expectations for test reports and ensures procedures are in place to record all test data is accurately in the company database for future reference. Defines new and updated test procedures, methods and standard operating procedures.
- Use various tools and techniques for root cause analysis (8D, 5Why, etc.) to improve product quality, understanding and investigating current production and field issues, determine, validate and implement corrective actions.
- Collaborate with QA and Production to analyze data trends, undertake testing where necessary and work with cross functional stakeholders to eliminate risks and improve current products.
- Collaborates closely with other staff R&D departments to ensure the best use of physical and human resources, to schedule efficiently and to ensure safety is preserved at all times.
- Collaborates closely with product development team leaders, (engineering manager, technology manger, etc.), as a partner to successfully develop products on time, on cost target and on development budget.
- Collaborates with Lab coordinator to ensure availability and suitability of material, test fixtures, instrumentation and equipment required for test execution.
Education & Experience:
- Must have minimum three (3) year College Diploma in mechanical or related engineering, (or equivalent). A University Degree in a relevant field would be considered as an asset. Directly applicable work experience and / or skilled trade qualifications may be also be considered.
- Minimum five (5) years’ demonstrated work experience in a directly related industry, (i.e. HVAC design, development or manufacturing), with a minimum of three (3) years’ testing and instrumentation experience required. Must possess knowledge and some practical experience of residential or commercial HVAC or Energy management processes. Some "hands on" mechanical or fabrication experience.
- C.E.T. preferred. P. Eng. license, or working towards, is considered an asset. A willingness to work toward industry recognized certification, (where applicable). Superior candidates will have valid Gas Fitters license (G3) for gas products, or valid Refrigeration certification for air conditioning products; when working with electrical products, have completed courses in PLC logic and electronic circuitry. PMP designation would be considered an asset. Refrigeration license (313) is considered an asset.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, and Excel). Superior candidates will be proficient in Microsoft project.
- Demonstrated proficiency in 3-D modeling software, familiar w/data acquisition systems, instrumentation, data collection, analysis and reporting
Specialized Skills:
- Knowledge and understanding of metal fabricating and processing
- Proficient with all lab testing equipment
- Understanding of applied thermodynamics and fluid mechanics
- Knowledge with load calculations, energy modeling and designing mechanical systems
- Knowledge of electrical and control systems
- Skilled in manufacturing and assembly processes
- Project Management
- Code practices an asset, familiar w/ industry standards and regulatory associations.
- Refrigeration knowledge, design building, testing and trouble-shooting AC, HP, chillers, air handlers or related equipment for AC product engineering
- Possess the ability to effectively articulate equipment features, function and design
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to function in a fast paced multi-functional environment where priorities change regularly
